Poster's Note: Disturbing story about teens sexual abuse of a toddler. Read at your own peril.
A father still wore a LeBonheur Children's
Hospital visitor's bracelet when he spoke with Action News 5 outside his
family's apartment in the Cordova Creek complex.
"I just got here," he said. "I've been at the hospital since it happened.
The father said his 14-year-old stepson and two friends, ages 11
and 13, are the boys charged with raping his 23-month-old daughter Monday night.
"We don't know anything, so talk to the investigators," the father said.
Memphis Police detailed the disturbing crime in a media release. They say they
first responded to a home invasion call, where officers were advised by
the children that a male suspect forced is way into the home. But sex
crimes investigators determined the story was fabricated by the boys to
cover up a sexual assault in which the 23-month-old child was raped.
The boys were hauled to juvenile court while the toddler was taken in critical condition to LeBonheur.
The victim's father did not say how long the little
girl had been alone with the boys, but the crime left neighbor Cindy
Yahola concerned about the safety of her eight year-old.
"We were told the other day by a neighbor that there was a 14-year-old that
offered him drugs here," said Yahola. "I'm not happy."
The toddler's father seemed confident she would be okay.
"She's a strong girl...hard as nails, so she's doing good," he said.
The victim's father said his step-son had his first hearing Tuesday
morning. The boy's mother said the other boys lived at another apartment complex in Cordova.

Heartbreaking and disturbing case.
15-year-old boy to be tried as an adult for rape of Cordova toddler
Second boy, 14, guilty of facilitation; third dismissed
A Juvenile Court Judge found probable cause Thursday to transfer a 15-year-old boy to adult criminal court to face charges in the rape and beating of a 23-month old girl.
James Prindle was transferred to Shelby County Criminal Court for aggravated rape of a child, aggravated child abuse and false reporting. No date for his first appearance has been set.
Juvenile Court Chief Magistrate Judge Herbert Lane, however, dismissed all charges against 12-year-old Micah Scheulin, and found his brother Noah Scheulin, 14, responsible only for facilitation of the aggravated child rape and child abuse crimes.
He was placed in the custody of the state, which will decide which facility he should go to.
On an unrelated possession-of-marijuana charge, Micah Scheulin was referred to counseling.
The toddler victim was brutally raped and beaten on the left side of her head on Aug. 16 inside an apartment on the 7900 block of Ryan Cove in Cordova. She and a 4-year-old brother were in Prindle's care at the time.
Lane noted the case against the three boys was entirely circumstantial, with no DNA evidence linking any of them to the rape, no eyewitness testimony and no admissions of guilt.
In sustaining charges against Prindle, Lane appeared to lean on evidence that the boy had made up a story that a masked robber had broken into the apartment, stolen a video game set and raped the child.
Noah Scheulin told a similar story about a masked robber. He told police the robber was white; Prindle said the robber was black.
There was evidence that the victim had been bathed by Prindle with the assistance of another person after she was raped.
A nurse practitioner who examined the victim described horrific injuries and bleeding. She said that despite being sedated on morphine, the child continued to fight and protest during the examination.
She found evidence that the child had been held down during the assault.
Lane said he was "left short" in Micah Schuelin's case, "unless I jump to the conclusion that because he was there, he was involved."
Noah Scheulin's story about a robbery "does make a case for facilitation," Lane said, but did not necessarily implicate him in the rape.
A Memphis Police crime scene investigator said there was no evidence of forced entry at the apartment.
Micah Scheulin put his face in his hands as the judge dismissed the charges. Noah Scheulin, with his mother standing behind him, cried for several minutes after he was judged.
"The judge did a wonderful job of sorting out the facts," said attorney Lorna McClusky who represented Micah Scheulin.
The victim's mother said that the child has been returned to her home. "She is doing so well, no nightmares," she said. "Hopefully, she won't remember."
