"Newborn Jane" GERING -(2010) Racine WI
A woman is suspected of giving birth at a Perkins restaurant in Racine, Wis. where she worked, then
leaving the infant in a trash bin behind another nearby restaurant.
The 23-year-old woman was arrested at her home today on suspicion of
first-degree reckless homicide and concealing the death of a child, Racine police said.
Police say she gave birth at the restaurant the morning of Aug. 16 and put the child in a bag, then put
the bag in the trash bin outside. She went to a hospital that afternoon
to seek medical attention, and suspicious staff called police.
When police later found the baby, she was dead.
An autopsy determined the infant was alive when she was put into
the trash bin behind an Old Country Buffet in the same strip mall.
Charges are expected from the Racine County District Attorney's office next week.

Breanna Gering, 23, of Franklin, was arrested today at her home, accused
of giving birth in Racine's Perkins Restaurant and then abandoning the
infant in a nearby dumpster.
Charges include First Degree Reckless Homicide and Concealing the Death
of a Child. Racine Police say Gering gave birth in Perkins' bathroom
about 9 a.m. on Aug. 16, then placed the infant in a bag in a garbage
dumpster at the restaurant, 4915 Washington Ave.
That afternoon, Racine Police responded to the Emergency Room at Wheaton
Franciscan-All Saints hospital in Racine, where Gering had come for
medical treatment. She reportedly displayed signs of recent childbirth,
but was evasive with medical staff, who called the police. It later was
determined that Gering had, in fact, been pregnant, and the dead infant
was discovered in the dumpster.

Final resting place? Disturbing...
A 23-year-old Franklin woman was arrested Friday by
Racine police after she allegedly gave birth at work and then put
her newborn daughter in a large trash bin, leaving the infant to die.
Breanna Gering works at Perkins Restaurant, 4915 Washington Ave.
and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 16 she reportedly gave birth in the bathroom
there, according to Lt. Ray Knapp. After giving birth, Gering
allegedly put her daughter into a bag and into a trash bin behind
the nearby Old Country Buffet.
After having the baby, police said Gering went back to work. She
left later that day to go to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints
hospital, 3801 Spring St., because she was having complications, Knapp said.
At the hospital, Gering initially denied to medical professionals
that she had given birth, police said.
Officers were called to the hospital at 3 p.m. After several hours
of questioning, Gering reportedly told police where to find the
baby in the trash bin. The baby's body was recovered by officers the same day.
Police said an autopsy was performed and the results show that the
infant was alive when she was put into the trash bin behind Old
Country Buffet, 4901 Washington Ave. Old Country Buffet and Perkins
are both within the Westgate Square strip mall complex.
Employees at the Old Country Buffet were told about the incident a
few days ago and a life coach was available to employees this week
in case they were having trouble coping or were disturbed by what
happened to the baby, said server Desiree Johnson.
"The first day a lot of people were in shock," said Johnson, 26, of
Racine. "We just can't believe somebody would do something like
that. We were like why didn't she just bring it here. We would have
taken care of it."
Johnson said no employees saw Gering put the baby in the trash bin
but that Old Country Buffet managers had viewed video of the
incident that showed Gering driving up to the bin and placing the baby inside.
Perkins employees were not allowed to talk to media Friday and
Perkins District Supervisor Todd Condon was at the Racine
restaurant Friday to handle media inquiries.
"All of our thoughts and concerns are with the people involved," Condon said.
Gering was arrested Friday for first-degree reckless homicide and
concealing the death of a child. She is being held in the Racine
County Jail and is expected to be formally charged by the Racine
County District Attorney's Office next week.
Knapp said Gering concealed the pregnancy and told police she
didn't know she was pregnant. The Franklin woman also has a
3-year-old child, according to police.

Sentencing for mother who dumped baby into trash
April 15, 2011
A woman who discarded her newborn baby into a trash dumpster has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleaded guilty to reckless homicide. Prosecutors said 24-year-old Breanna Gering of Franklin gave birth in the restroom of a diner where she was working then dumped the baby outside.
“There’s no doubt this baby was alive” said Racine County Assistant District Attorney Rich Chiapete, adding Gering denied being pregnant even when confronted by police with confirmation.
Defense attorney Julius Kim claimed Gering panicked and did not think the child was alive after she was born. Kim also claimed the young woman felt “tremendous pressure” from a conservative family after she had the child from a boyfriend they did not know about, and already had a child out of wedlock.
“I wish I could go back and change that day and I’m just so, so sorry,” Gering tearfully apologized to her family, her 3-year-old daughter, and to the infant.
Racine County Judge Allan Torhorst acknowledged that Gering was driven by denial, along with both family and other pressures. He called it “an incredibly tragic event.”
