A 2-year-old girl who was brought to Children's
Mercy Hospital this week with what police said were obvious signs of
child abuse has died, and the child's mother and her boyfriend are in
custody.The boyfriend, Antonio Murray, 25, was charged with
first-degree endangering the welfare of a child on Friday, and officials
said additional charges are anticipated upon the completion of the
investigation. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.A relative of
the girl said she saw Brandi Clemoens just the day before she was
brought to the hospital with a severe head injury and bruises all over
her body."I had big dreams for my niece about signing her up for
ballet when she turned 5, but she didn't even get to be 4," the aunt
said.The aunt, who asked that her identity not be revealed said that she still can't believe Brandi had died just
after noon on Friday. She said everything appeared normal when she
picked her up along with her brother from day care on Tuesday."I just picked them up, and she said, 'Auntie, I love you,'" the woman said.On
Wednesday, Brandi's mother, Sheika Clemoens, and her boyfriend rushed
the girl to Children's Mercy after she collapsed at home and stopped
breathing. Police said the pair's story about the girl having fallen
down didn't match the injuries. Investigators said they believe the girl
had been abused.The aunt said she doesn't believe the mother would ever strike the children."I was around her and never saw nothing like that," she said.Sheika Clemoens is being held on outstanding warrants, and her boyfriend turned himself in to police for questioning.While
no charges had been filed against the mother by Friday afternoon, the aunt said she hopes
the incident will serve as a lesson to other single mothers.

The injuries were too severe for little Brandi Clemoens to overcome.The 2-year-old Kansas City girl died Friday, two days after she was rushed to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where doctors suspected child abuse. Bruises were visible on her head, torso, legs and buttocks, according to police reports, and later examination revealed severe brain injury.The boyfriend of Brandi’s mother has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Court documents allege that Antonio A. Murray, 25, of Kansas City, struck Brandi.Brandi’s mother, who is pregnant, was questioned but has not been charged in Brandi’s death. The couple brought Brandi to the hospital Wednesday night. According to court documents, the mother told police she went to school that day, leaving Brandi and her 3-year-old brother with Murray. The mother said Murray later called her and said he “whooped” Brandi for wetting herself, court documents say. But Murray told police he only made the girl stand in a corner.The mother told detectives that after she returned home, Brandi fell down and became unresponsive.According to police reports, Brandi’s brother also had bruises on his body. He has been placed in the care of social service workers.Police said Murray denied injuring Brandi or her brother. Brandi’s father is in prison, relatives said.

Prosecutors have dismissed a child endangerment charge filed last year against a Kansas City man in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl. But Kansas City police say they are continuing to investigate the death of Brandi Clemoens.

Brandi died in September two days after being taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital with a severe head injury and multiple bruises, court documents said.

Her mother’s boyfriend at the time, Antonio A. Murray, 26, was charged with child endangerment, but prosecutors dismissed the case earlier this year. Murray has denied hurting the child.

This is sad news. I hope that justice will eventually be served for baby Brandi.
