Vigil set for missing Westland teen
Sister of another missing girl aids family of 16-year-old who disappeared 3 months ago

The sister of a Macomb County girl who disappeared from an Eastpointe Dairy Queen in 1986 is aiding efforts to find a Westland teenager who has been missing since August. Connie Johnson is among those promoting a vigil this evening for Carlee Morse, 16, who was last seen early Aug. 20 outside her family's apartment.
"Because my sister was missing for so long and we didn't know, I have a heart for missing kids and their parents," Johnson said Friday. Her sister, Cindy Zarzycki, was 13 when she disappeared April 20, 1986. Her body was found in 2008 after Arthur Ream, the father of one of her friends, was convicted of luring her to the Dairy Queen and abducting and murdering her. He is serving a life prison sentence. The vigil for Carlee will be held at 6:30 p.m. in front of a Garden City home at 28419 Maplewood. Organizers, including Carlee's mother, Lori Morse, expect at least 50 people to participate, but hope more will join them to pray for Carlee's safe return. Carlee stepped outside her apartment building, near the corner of Warren and Venoy, on Aug. 20 just after midnight with her mother's permission, a 10-minute time limit and no shoes, Morse said. Carlee made an unanswered phone call, but left no voice-mail message for the recipient. Realizing her daughter had not returned after about an hour, Morse called Carlee's cell phone, which went straight to voice mail. Morse went to the police station about 2 a.m., she said, but was told to wait to file a missing persons report and give Carlee time to come home. When the girl didn't return, Morse said she filed the report that evening, about 9 p.m. Morse said she tried in vain during those early hours and days to convince police that her daughter is not a runaway. "By the third week, the officer said to me, 'This is strange — a typical runaway would have made contact before this amount of time,'" Morse said. Morse said she would prefer to believe that Carlee ran away and might contact her family. "But I don't believe that for a minute," she said. "My daughter would have already contacted us." Carlee is described as 5 feet tall and weighing 90 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to call Westland Police at (734) 722-9600.

Re: CARLEE JADE MORSE - 16 yo (2010) - Westland (W of Detroit) MI
A candlelight vigil to draw attention to a missing Westland teenager drew about 80 people Saturday night.
Carlee Morse, 16, of Westland disappeared just after midnight Aug.20."We're hoping the vigil will bring some exposure to the case, because with every day that passes, we're losing hope that she is alive," said Beth Pluta, a longtime family friend who helped organize the event outside the home of another family friend in Garden City.Westland police classified Carlee as a missing person in an active investigation. "We've received quite a few tips on her whereabouts, but at this stage of the game, nothing has panned out," said police Sgt. Steve Bird.Carlee's mother, Lori Morse, cradled a picture of her daughter at the vigil and said she was optimistic that something good would come of the event. Attendees prayed, held a moment of silence and sang the Lord's Prayer at the half-hour event."There is such a void in our hearts with her gone. I always try to stay hopeful and pray that she'll come home," said Morse, who also has a 23-year-old daughter. "I pray for the best, but sometimes you have to prepare for what could possibly happen."On the night she disappeared, Carlee stepped outside just after midnight barefoot and in her pajamas to talk on the phone and never returned, said her mother, who added that her daughter did not have any money, clothes, purse or extra clothing with her.Since her disappearance, her cell phone has not been active. Additionally, none of her friends or family has seen or heard from her, the girl's mother said."It's been a nightmare," Morse said. "I know Carlee's character, and she would have contacted someone by now."Wendy Campau, 40, of Lincoln Park said she is a family friend and came out to the vigil to show her support for the family."It's got to be so difficult for the family to go through something like this," she said. "My heart goes out to them."She said volunteers have handed out more than 10,000 flyers since Carlee disappeared.

Two men arrested in connection with death of missing Westland teen
December 10, 2010
Westland Police are working with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to complete an investigation into what now appears to be the murder of a 16-year-old Westland teen reported missing by her mother in August. Two men - a 19-year-old from Westland and a 22-year-old from Taylor, have confessed to Killing Carlee Jade Morse on Aug. 19, the same day she turned up missing from her family’s WEstland apartment.“We believe she was probably killed that day and likely within an hour of her going missing,” said Westland Police Chief Alan Ramsden. “We have yet to locate her remains and are actively working on that.”Acting on information they received on Thursday, detectives from the Westland Police Department along with officers from the Taylor Police Department and the Canton Township Police Department made the two arrests.According to the teen’s mother, she had given her daughter permission to go outside and make a quick phone call. When she didn’t return, she reported her missing to police. The mother didn’t believe her daughter was a runaway since she had gone outside without shoes, money or a change of clothes. Thousands of fliers were circulated in hopes of getting information about the teen’s whereabouts.A prayer vigil also was held in Garden City less than a month ago to draw attention to the search.Ramsden said the department received reports that she was in the Canton or Garden City, but none of them panned out. At the time, they had no evidence suggesting foul play. “Officers checked out a number of leads from who had said they had seen her or where she might be, but none ever came to fruition,” Ramsden said. “We heavily doubt they saw her.”Information about the whereabouts of the victim’s remains is being withheld while police continue to investigate active leads, Ramsden added.

Men Have Not Said Where Morse's Body Is, Police Say

UPDATED: 5:02 pm EST December 11, 2010
WESTLAND, Mich. -- Westland police said 16-year-old Carly Jade Morse was strangled to death by two men.
A 19-year-old man from Taylor and a 22-year-old man from Canton were arrested after they told police that they killed Morse by strangling her, police said.
VIDEO REPORT: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/26101177/detail.html
Friends and family members of Morse said she stepped out of her apartment building on Aug. 19. That was the last day she had been seen or heard from.
Police said it is likely Morse was killed just an hour after she left her apartment that day. Police believe the two men who confessed to killing her were people she considered friends.
Morse's stepfather, Patrick Maloy, said he helped raise her.
"Carly was a spirit and a half," Maloy said. "She had a glow about her."
Police said the two men have not said where Morse's body is and police are continuing a search for her remains.
The investigation into a group of Morse's friends connected to the two killers also continues, police said. The men will be charged soon.
"If you knew Carly, it's just not right," Maloy said.

Family slams Westland cops' handling of girl's disappearance
Ex-stepfather of Carlee Morse, missing since August, says Westland police handling 'a mess'
Westland — The former stepfather of a 16-year-old girl missing since Aug. 20 and now presumed dead has harsh words for the Westland Police Department even though detectives say they have two men in custody who confessed to strangling the teen. What's more, he said, detectives have told the family that the two men won't reveal the body's location.
Carlee Morse went outside her family's apartment near Warren and Venoy about 1 a.m. Aug. 20 wearing only clothes she normally would have slept in and without shoes, her purse or any other personal items, her mother, Lori Morse, told The Detroit News in November. But when Morse tried to report her missing an hour later, she said officers told her to give Carlee time to return and that the girl likely had run away. That angers Patrick Malloy, Carlee's former stepfather, who believes police did not aggressively investigate the case. "The whole thing has been fouled up," Malloy, 45, of Garden City said of the investigation. "It has been a mess." Malloy said Lori Morse contacted him about a week after Carlee had been gone and asked him to help find her. He said he checked around and spoke to people who said there were rumors linking the suspects now in custody to Carlee's disappearance and that the information was passed along to investigators who "didn't act fast enough." Westland police detectives weren't available for comment Sunday. Police officers working Sunday said there was no comment or press release to issue to the media. Carlee's relatives declined comment Sunday but said they were going to address the media today. A 19-year-old Westland man and a 22-year-old Taylor man are in custody after police arrested them Thursday. Malloy said he was present when investigators told his ex-wife that the suspects confessed to killing her daughter about an hour after her family knew she was gone and that they believed the men's account of what happened. But the suspects didn't say where her body was, something that worries Malloy. "They confessed, but the police can't get the body's location? These guys (the suspects) aren't rocket scientists," Malloy said.

WESTLAND — A preliminary examination of the evidence against two men and
the mother of one charged in the death of a 16-year-old girl has been
adjourned until mid-January.
Nicholas Jay Cottrell, 22, of Taylor
and Justin Lee Yoshikawa, 19, of Westland have been charged with
first-degree murder in connection with the death of Carlee Jade Morse of Westland.
Cottrell’s mother, Tina Lowe, 49, of Belleville, has
been charged as an accessory to the crime after the fact as well as
interfering with a police investigation.
Both men were arraigned Dec. 14 before 18th District Judge Sandra Ference Cicirelli and are being held without bond.
Cottrell is being charged as a habitual offender- fourth offense.
Lowe is being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
Cicirelli refused to lower Lowe’s bond because she said Lowe not only knew about
the crime herself, but is accused also of “threatening” witnesses so
that they wouldn’t go to police.
All three appeared at a preliminary examination of the evidence against them at 1 p.m. Tuesday before Cicirelli.
Wayne County assistant prosecutor Lisa Screen requested the adjournment
because she still is waiting for Michigan State Police lab and cell

WESTLAND: Location of 16-year-old's body revealed, Belleville woman still charged as accessory
Published: Sunday, January 16, 2011
The location of the body of a teenage girl missing since August was revealed in court today.
A preliminary examination of the evidence against two men and the mother
of one charged in the death of 16-year-old Carlee Jade Morse still is
being heard in 18th District Court.
Nicholas Jay Cottrell, 22, of Taylor and Justin Lee Yoshikawa, 19, of Westland have been charged in
the death of the Westland resident. Yoshikawa has been bound over for
trail; the date is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 20 in Wayne County Circuit Court.
During the preliminary examination, Cottrell testified against Yoshikawa. He
said Yoshikawa strangled Morse with a rope in Cottrell's Ford Escort.
Cottrell said they put her body in a garbage bag and dumped her in a church
trash bin about two hours south of Michigan. He told the judge he does
not remember the exact location.
Cottrell's mother, Tina Lowe, 49, of Belleville, has been charged as an accessory to the crime after
the fact and with interfering with a police investigation.
Both men were arraigned Dec. 14 before 18th District Judge Sandra Ference Cicirelli. They are being held without bond.
Cottrell is being charged as a habitual offender- fourth offense.
Lowe is being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
Cottrell took a plea deal to testify against Yoshikawa, and he is now facing 25
to 50 years in prison. The deal reduced a first-degree murder charge to
second degree. The first-degree charge would have had Cottrell serve
life in prison without parole. Continued...

Family's questions go unanswered as man is sentenced in teen girl's death
Why is she dead and where is she now?
Those were the questions Carlee Morse's mother and sister begged Nicholas Cottrell to answer at his sentencing Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Cottrell offered no answers, saying only that he feared his alleged partner, Justin Yoshikawa.
"I would be dead also" he said -- and even that was against his lawyer's advice.
Cottrell, 22, was sentenced to 25-50 years in prison for second-degree murder as part of a plea deal with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to testify against Yoshikawa. Cottrell admitted to helping strangle Carlee, 16, whose broken body was stuffed into a trash bag and tossed away last summer. Her body still hasn't been found.
"I believe you know where she is," Lori Morse, Carlee's mother, implored Cottrell. "You need to do the right thing. She doesn't need to be left in trash and garbage."

Re: CARLEE JADE MORSE - 16 yo (2010) - Westland (W of Detroit) MI
A man charged with murdering a Westland teenager has been found competent to stand trial. At
a hearing Friday morning, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Ulysses
Boykin accepted a psychologist's report that Justin Lee Yoshikawa, 19,
is criminally responsible and competent to stand trial. Yoshikawa is
charged with first-degree murder in the death of Carlee Morse, 16.Boykin
scheduled a final pre-trial conference for May 20, with Yoshikawa
scheduled for a jury trial Wednesday, July 13. The attorneys estimated
the trial — with an expected 18 prosecution witnesses and six witnesses
for the defense — would last six days.Co-defendant Nicholas
Cottrell, 22, earlier entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and
is serving 25-50 years in prison. Cottrell is currently housed at the
Carson City Correctional Facility, with his earliest possible release
date in 2035.Part of Cottrell's plea agreement was that he
testify against Yoshikawa, a former Wayne Memorial High School student.
In his testimony in 18th District Court, Cottrell described Yoshikawa as
planning and carrying out a plan to strangle Morse, his former
girlfriend.Morse was reported missing after she disappeared
shortly after midnight Aug. 20. The teen's family and friends searched
for her, but the police investigation and statements from the defendants
were that Morse was killed shortly after leaving her apartment to take a
ride with Cottrell. Both men told police similar stories about
Cottrell inviting Morse to take a ride and smoke marijuana while
Yoshikawa hid in the back seat. Yoshikawa and Cottrell told police that
they smoked marijuana, then drove around aimlessly before placing
Morse's body in a Dumpster outside a church. Her body has not been
located.Cottrell's mother Tina Lowe, 49, is also scheduled for
trial July 13 on charges of being an accessory after the fact and
interfering in a police investigation in the murder. Lowe is charged
with telling a witness not to come forward with information about the
murder.A witness eventually did provide police with information
about Morse's murder that resulted in Yoshikawa and Cottrell being
arrested.Family and friends of Morse were in the courtroom, as
were members of Yoshikawa's family. Both the victim and the accused are
represented on Facebook with pages such as Do Not Free Justin Yoshikawa
and Nicholas Cottrell and the Justin Yoshikawa Support Page.
