The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office is still investigating reports a child was abducted around 7:30 a.m. Monday.Just before 9 a.m. a witness called 911 and reported seeing an older model 1970s or 1980s tan colored sedan pull alongside a child who was walking in the area of Midway and Harbor boulevards near Neil Armstrong Elementary School."We're not sure if it's a male or female. The age can be anywhere from 6 to 8," said Bob Carpenter of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office. The witness says there were two men in the car. A white man with grey hair was driving and the passenger was a black man who got out of the car and grabbed the child by the hand."Someone saw a child getting into a car, there appeared to be a struggle," said Mike Riley of the Charlotte County School District. The first two letters on the license plate were either L5 or LS.Detectives say the incident happened at 7:30 a.m., but the witness waited until 9 a.m. to report it.The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office waited two hours before alerting the media.Parents say they received an automated message from the school district shortly after 9 a.m."There was a possible Amber Alert in the area stating that a child had been wearing a red striped shirt, backpack and struggling against a person in a tan car," said Danielle Campagne.Deputies immediately began going door to door, searching for the child on foot, by air and with police dogs.Employees at Neil Armstrong Elementary began going over its attendance record. They called all parents whose children were absent from school."This is someone's child. This is the utmost importance. It used to be education was most important, but now it's the safety and welfare of the kids and that's the case today," said Riley.Authorities are still investigating, but no Amber Alert has been issued. No children between the ages of 6 and 8 have been reported missing.Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call deputies at (941) 639-2101 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 780-TIPS.

The reported child abduction earlier this week in Port Charlotte was fortunately just a misunderstanding, according to deputies.Deputies swarmed an area near Neil Armstrong Elementary School Monday morning after a report of a young child being pulled into a car.But the sheriff's office says they were able to locate the father of the boy and get the whole story about what really happened. The 36-year-old man, who has two sons, couldn't take them to their bus stops Monday, so the boys tried to walk. But after the boys had set off, the man called a friend and they drove around looking for the children. They found them on Midway Boulevard near Scotten Street. One boy got into the car, but the other stopped to tie his shoe by the roadway and the father pulled him into the vehicle and then they drove off.The witness saw that part as she was headed eastbound on Midway. Deputies say she turned around and followed the car, getting a partial license plate number. The woman then went to work, got busy, and then later reported the incident. After the initial alert, more people who saw the boys and the car came forward and deputies were eventually able to identify the father.
