Stevenson AL ---- Investigators in Jackson County say it's one of the
worst cases of child abuse they've ever seen. Sherman McBryar, 30, of
Stevenson, is charged with two counts of torture and willful abuse of a
child under 18. The two girls he's accused of abusing are one and
two-years-old.

Jackson County Chief Deputy Chuck Phillips says they got a tip Thursday
about the abuse. Phillips says he can't discuss what was going on, but
that it was very serious. He says if they had not found out what was
going on when they did, the girls could have easily died. The girls were
treated and released from a local hospital.

A Jackson County jury convicted McBryar of manslaughter back in 2003.
He was sentenced to spend 15 years in state prison, but was released
after only 4. It's not clear why he was released early.

McBryar faces more charges, $2.1 million bond
By Dewayne Patterson
The Daily Sentinel

Published August 18, 2010
Bond for Sherman Nathaniel McBryar, accused of abusing his two small children, has been raised from $500,000 to $2.1 million after he was charged with an additional 16 counts of Torture and Willful Abuse of a Child Under 18 Monday.
McBryar's bond is believed to be the highest ever set in Jackson County.
A week ago, McBryar's common law wife filed a complaint against him for abusing the two children, an 18-month-old girl and two-year-old girl.
"There was a tremendous amount of abuse to the children," Chief Deputy Chuck Phillips said. "If the abuse had continued on, it could very well have been life threatening."
A copy of the complaint, obtained from the Jackson County Circuit Clerk's Office, accuses McBryar of slamming the 18-month-old's head into the wall repeatedly and also putting a wire tie around her wrist to prevent her from sucking her thumb.
He is also accused of forcing the two-year-old to stand in the corner at attention and also of putting her in her carseat in the bathroom with three coats with a room temperature above 90 degrees.
The children are currently being cared for by another family member.
McBryar, 30, was released from state prison on Jan. 10, 2007, according to a spokesperson for the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, after serving just over four years on a manslaughter conviction in the shooting death of 19-year-old Terri Lynn Hughes of Section.
Hughes died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest on Jan. 23, 2001 at the home of McBryar on County Road 531 in the Old Larkinsville Road area.
McBryar was convicted of murder on Nov. 16, 2001 and sentenced to 30 years. However, he appealed and received a new trial a year later.
A jury convicted him of manslaughter, and he was sentenced to 15 years.

A Jackson County man has been indicted on 18 counts of child abuse. Investigators say Sherman McBryar is a suspect in one of the worst cases they've ever seen.
McBryar, 30, of Stevenson, is charged with willful abuse of a child under 18. The two girls he is accused of abusing are one and two years old. Part of the charges involve McBryar allegedly forcing the girls to wear homemade straight jackets.
Jackson County Chief Deputy Chuck Phillips says his team got a tip about the abuse. Phillips says he can't discuss what was going on, but that it was very serious. He says if they had not found out what was going on when they did, the girls could have easily died. They were treated at a local hospital and released.
McBryar was convicted of manslaughter in 2003. He was sentenced to spend 15 years in prison, but was released after only four years. It's not clear why he was released early.

A Jackson County mother says she wants her kids back. They were taken by DHR after her common law husband, Sherman McBryar was jailed on eighteen counts of torturing them."I want my children. I want a chance to have my children," said Katherine Young."He was charming, very charming."That is the kind of guy Young says McBryar was when they first met, but she says after they had kids, it changed."Beat her into the front door and slung her across my living room."Young says she only gets to see them once a week for an hour and feels frustrated, because she feels she didn't do anything wrong."I was hurt, because those are my kids, and I never hurt my kids and never would."She said she feels like she's paying the price for her husband's criminal case, but says she's doing what they tell her to get them back."Try to stay strong, so I can get my kids one day."Barry spear with DHR says they are not able to comment on specific cases due to confidentiality, but he does say a person does not have to be charged with a crime for the children to be removed. He says when it is done, it is for the safety of the child, and has a judges approval before it's done.

Not that certain criminals can be rehabbed and function in a law-abiding society I do not feel it is in the best interest of children to be placed in an environment with a CONVICTED MURDERER.
Dumb ass!

A Jackson County man accused of child abuse and torturing his daughters rejected a plea deal.

Sherman McBryar had until noon today to accept the deal or face trial. He chose to face trial.

A criminal complaint stated that McBryar put
his two-year-old in a car seat in the bathroom with three goats while
the temperature was more than 90 degrees.

He is also accused of slamming his
one-year-old's head into a wall and putting a wire around her wrist to
keep her from sucking her thumb.

Deputies arrested McBryar after the children's mother made a complaint.

McBryar was deemed competent to stand trial this spring.

Jury selection for the trial will begin Monday in Scottsboro.

A
Stevenson man has pleaded guilty in what Jackson County authorities say
is one of the worst cases of child abuse they have ever seen.Nathaniel McBryar pleaded guilty Thursday to three charges of child abuse. Circuit Judge Jennifer Holt sentenced him to consecutive sentences totaling 35 years.
The
charges against McBryar accused him of slamming his 1-year-old
daughter's head into the wall and putting a wire tie around her wrist to
prevent thumb sucking. He was accused of putting his 2-year-old
daughter in her car seat in the bathroom with three goats while the room
temperature was above 90 degrees.
He previously served about four years in prison for a manslaughter conviction in 2003.
