Man arrested in connection with quadruple slayings

Kimani Washington faces weapons charges in connection with the shooting deaths.

A Massachusetts man has been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of four people, including a toddler, in Boston Tuesday, police said Saturday.

Kimani Washington, 35, was arrested without incident Friday night in an apartment complex in Manchester, New Hampshire, police there said. He is being held in New Hampshire pending his arraignment at Manchester District Court on a fugitive from justice charge.

"Today should serve as a warning to all those who seek to harm others," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. "Our offices will not rest until you are hunted down, captured and locked up."

In Massachusetts, Washington faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and receiving a stolen motor vehicle in connection with the shooting, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.
The brutal shootings occurred on Sept. 28 around 1:15 a.m. in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston.

The shootings did not appear to be random, District Attorney Dan Conley said earlier this week. The individuals were found lying in the street - one of them naked. He has not been charged with murder.

Police identified the victims as Eyanna Louise Flonory, 21, her 2-year-old son, Amanihotep Smith, Simba Martin, 21, and Lavaughan Washum-Garrison, 22, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

A fifth person was brought to the hospital in critical condition.

The police commissioner declined to comment on whether Washington may have been the shooter in this case. He also refused to say whether police have any other suspects.

Another arraigned in Mattapan case
The first person arrested in connection with the quadruple Mattapan killings in September was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail yesterday after his arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court.
Kimani Washington, 35, of Dorchester faces charges including armed robbery, armed carjacking, trafficking cocaine, and being an armed career criminal. He pleaded not guilty and is slated to return to court Feb. 22.
Washington has not been charged with the murder of four people, including a 2-year-old, and the shooting of another person who is now paralyzed. But prosecutors say he was a mastermind behind an armed home invasion that precipitated the shootings.
After the shootings, on Woolson Street in Mattapan, police searched a family home in Dorchester where Washington stayed occasionally and allegedly found more than 28 grams of crack cocaine taken during the robbery, as well as two guns.
“One of those firearms was fired on Woolson Street,’’ Assistant District Attorney Edmond Zabin said in court yesterday.
Killed were: Eyanna Flonory, 21, of Dorchester; her 2-year-old son, Amani Smith; Simba Martin, 21, of Mattapan; and LeVaughn Washum-Garrison, 22, of Roslindale. A fifth person — Marcus Hurd, 32, of Dorchester — was also shot and is paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Two men have been charged with the slayings. Washington’s cousin — Edward Washington, 31, of Dorchester — is expected to be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court today. Dwayne Moore, 33, of Mattapan was arraigned last week and was ordered held without bail. He pleaded not guilty and yelled out in court that the charges against him were false.
Prosecutors said that Kimani Washington and Moore knew each other from stints in prison and that they hatched a plan to rob Martin of drugs and cash. Moore had stayed for some time last summer at Martin’s home on Sutton Street.
On the morning of Sept. 28, Kimani Washington and Moore allegedly carried out their plan with Edward Washington.
Zabin said yesterday that Kimani Washington left the house after the robbery and that his cousin and Moore marched the victims to Woolson Street, where Moore allegedly shot them. Prosecutors have not said whether they believe Edward Washington also fired.
Later in the morning, the three men allegedly met again to divide the proceeds of the robbery.
Kimani Washington was arrested by Boston police Oct. 1 in Manchester, N.H., in connection with the Mattapan slayings.

Kimani Washington pleads guilty in Mattapan attack
By Maria Cramer  | Globe Staff   January 25, 2013

McEvoy sentenced Washington to 16 to 18 years in prison for his role, approving a plea agreement his lawyer, John Salsberg, had struck with prosecutors in the months following the shootings, which became known as the Mattapan massacre.

Washington made the deal in exchange for his testimony against his cousin Edward Washington, 33, and Dwayne Moore, 35, who was convicted last month in the killings. Edward Washington was acquitted during the first trial in March.

“This is a horrible case, a tragic case,” McEvoy said. “I’m cognizant of the importance to the government of the testimony of Kimani Washington.”

Washington, a stocky, bald 37-year-old with a long history of drug dealing and gun possession, admitted to planning the armed robbery with Moore, whom he met in prison, and his cousin.
