NICOLAS DEREK CARBAJAL - 1 yo - Oklahoma City OK
The 1-year-old son of a woman deployed to Afghanistan is in the hospital with numerous injuries, and the friends entrusted with his care have been arrested.
Police arrested legal guardians Gabriel Brian Solis, 29, and Elsa Solis, 30, of Oklahoma City, on complaints of child abuse by a caretaker. They were booked into the Oklahoma County jail Friday and later released on bail, jail records show. They have not been charged. The police report released Monday lists Gabriel Solis as an active duty member of the military, and Elsa Solis told police her husband is stationed at Tinker Air Force Base.Elsa Solis told police she and her husband became friends with the boy's mother when they all were at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. The mother asked the couple to be legal guardians of her son when she learned of a pending deployment to Afghanistan.A doctor at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center called police about 11:05 p.m. Thursday and said she suspected the injuries were caused by abuse, according to the Oklahoma City police report. Paramedics brought the boy to the hospital after he vomited and had a five-minute seizure. The boy had bleeding on the brain, a broken left shoulder, a lacerated liver, a punctured lung with blood in his abdomen and a large bite mark on his left thigh, the report states. The doctor told police almost all the boy's ribs were broken and in various stages of healing, and he had bruising on his face, back and legs. The victim also had bruising on his chest indicating he had been squeezed. The boy's mother has been notified about her son's hospitalization, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. Her name was not released by police.A Facebook profile for Eyvette Carbajal lists Gabriel Solis and Elsa Solis-Salmeron as "siblings." The profile names Nicolas Derek Carbajal as her son.In an update posted Monday afternoon Carbajal wrote, "Nico is doing better he is really banged up. But he is getting the good rest he needs. Thank you everyone who is praying for him."Nicolas Carbajal was in good condition Monday at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.Elsa Solis told police the bruise on the left side of the boy's face came from falling on a toy, but she could not explain the rest of the injuries. She said the boy did not have the injuries before paramedics took him to the hospital.Tinker spokesman Ron Mullan said he was not able to verify Solis' rank or duty status Monday because he and other public affairs personnel were out of the office for Columbus Day.The boy's mother left for Afghanistan in June, shortly after the Solis couple left Hawaii following Gabriel Solis' transfer to Tinker, the report states. The couple spent about a month in California visiting relatives this summer with the boy and their own two children before moving to Oklahoma City. The victim and the Solis couple's 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were taken into protective custody, according to the report.

How horrible to be stuck in a foreign country, at war, with the constant threat of impending death and have the person entrusted with your child do this to him. How horrible, how horrible.

---Yes, dear twinkle, the reason I highlight the injuries in cases like this is so that people can get a picture in their mind of how savagely the baby was treated. At 1 yo it doesn't take much to break ribs, but the bleeding on the brain, the contusions and bruises and lacerations...those come from a steady course of beatings and shakings.twinkletoe wrote:How horrible to be stuck in a foreign country, at war, with the constant threat of impending death and have the person entrusted with your child do this to him. It is appalling to imagine what monster could perpetrate such terror on a baby...
