No one has heard from a Fairfax County teenager who ran away from home in January, prompting a search for her that has targeted Spanish-speaking communities and international-oriented businesses over the past several months.
Maria Elena Benitez-Moralez, 16, was reported missing from Falls Church on Jan. 4. She is believed to have left with an adult man who is her boyfriend.Authorities say the pair may still be in Northern Virginia, but it's likely that they have traveled to North Carolina or Mexico.They were believed to have been driving a white 1997 Ford pickup that has a North Carolina license plate.Benitez-Moralez was in the United States legally, said Preston Findlay, a lawyer with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.But when a young person was born overseas or has family abroad, he said, "there's always a possibility that the child returns to the home country."Findlay said searches for Benitez-Moralez have focused on Spanish-speaking communities in the area and international-oriented businesses.When a missing person is believed to have gone to another country, he said, authorities often try to raise awareness about the case through businesses that have contacts abroad, such as shipping companies.Benitez-Moralez is described as Hispanic, about 5 feet tall and weighing about 85 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.A description of the boyfriend with whom she may be traveling is not available.Benitez-Moralez is classified as an endangered runaway, which means that she left home voluntarily but authorities are concerned about her well-being.
