A man accused of smothering his 4-year-old son to death is expected to face a judge this morning, nearly a week after relatives say he "just snapped."Joseph A. Mitchell, 46, an out-of-work emergency medical technician, is accused of killing his youngest child, Blake, and trying to do the same to his 10- and 13-year-old children inside their Thistle Trace home on Wednesday. After paramedics tried to revive the little boy, Mitchell was later found inside an upstairs study with self-inflicted stab wounds. He spent two days recovering at Duke Hospital, where he was served with warrants for murder and two counts of attempted murder, before being transported to Central Prison on Friday afternoon for suicide monitoring.Mitchell is being held at the Raleigh facility without bail, and has been ordered to stay away from his wife and children.Police and paramedics were dispatched to the home when Mitchell's father-in-law, Pete Perolini, who lived with the family, called 911 and said he and his daughter were afraid Mitchell had done something to one of the children. An operator gave Mitchell's wife, Christine, instructions as she tried to revive her youngest child.Search warrants released Friday afternoon show that investigators seized a number of items after searching the couple's home and four cars, including a mask, a knife, two gloves, a door key, a blood swab, a jacket and an envelope from BB&T bank addressed to Joseph Mitchell.Court records indicate that the family struggled to hold onto the $430,000 home they bought in 2001. Mitchell is currently unemployed but have held various medical-related jobs and his wife was a stay-at-home mom who sold Avon products. The Mitchells bought their home in the Hardscrabble Plantation subdivision on the Durham-Orange county line in 2001 for $348,000. In 2009, it was assessed at more than $431,000.Public records show the family went through four foreclosure proceedings since 2005. Internet real estate sites show the home was repossessed June 2, when a bank bought the property for $243,101 - nearly $200,000 less than its assessed value."He must have just snapped," said Mitchell's aunt, Wilhelmina Mitchell of Roosevelt, N.Y., who learned Wednesday that her nephew was facing the possibility of losing his home. "I don't know how else to say it. The pressures of everyday life, trying to provide a good life for those three kids and seeing them suffer because he couldn't provide for them. Maybe he felt that he was less of a man because he couldn't provide for them."I don't know," she said. "But this is not Joseph. He never hurt a fly."Last week's events came as a surprise to many of Mitchell's neighbors and relatives, who said he was a good father who coached his children's little league teams and invited them to practice in his backyard. Hall-Wynne Funeral Service of Durham is handling the funeral arrangements for Blake Anthonly Mitchell. A funeral mass for the 4-year-old will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1001 Mason Road, Durham. Donations may be made to the Christine Mitchell/Blake Mitchell Fund at any Wachovia bank branch. Online memorials can be made at .The website for Voyager Academy, where the Mitchell children attend school, says the family needs money and gift cards. Both can be sent to the school, which will forward the donations to Christine Mitchell.

Mitchell on Monday on charges he killed his 4-year-old son and tried to kill his two older children.Mitchell, 46, an out-of-work emergency medical technician, is charged with the murder of his youngest child, Blake, and the attempted murder of his 10- and 13-year-old children inside their Thistle Trace home two weeks ago. After paramedics tried to revive the little boy, Mitchell was found in an upstairs study with self-inflicted wounds. He spent two days recovering at Duke Hospital, where he was served with warrants for murder and two counts of attempted murder, before being taken to Central Prison on Friday afternoon for suicide monitoring.Mitchell is being held without bail. An indictment indicates the grand jury found enough evidence to proceed to trial.

Autopsy says boy choked to death
Published Fri, Jun 17, 2011 05:36 AM
DURHAM -- Medical examiners who performed an autopsy on a 4-year-old boy reported a "distinctive injury pattern" around the child's neck that resembled a chain link, according to a medical report made public Thursday.
The child, Blake Anthony Mitchell of Durham, died of asphyxia, according to the autopsy report from the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill. Durham County Sheriff's deputies reported bleeding around Blake's eyes, along with bruising across the boy's throat. The child's injuries were consistent with death by suffocation or strangulation.
Blake's father, Joseph Anthony Mitchell, is charged with first-degree murder in the child's death.
Investigators think Mitchell smothered Blake late September of last year and attempted to do the same with his other two children, then 10 and 13, in the home where they resided at Thistle Trace.
While paramedics tried to save Blake, Durham County deputies searched the home and came across a locked bedroom. Deputies forced the door open and found Mitchell injured from an apparent suicide attempt. He was rushed into surgery at Duke Hospital.
