DURHAM, N.C. - The search is on in Durham and throughout the Triangle for a missing one-year old boy police say was abducted by a relative.
Investigators say they still aren’t sure why the youngster was taken, but they do say there was big delay in notifying them of his disappearance.
The child was abducted on Sunday, but Durham police weren't notified till midday Monday.
As a result, they were working on a trail that was already getting cool in their search for 1-yr-old Eliut Briseno.
“He’s been missing since 4 o’clock Sunday when his uncle took him, got on a bus which last seen headed North on Fayetteville Street,” said Durham Police Sgt. David Addison.
The closest bus stop to the child's neighborhood is about a block away from his Fisher Place home; an easy walk for his uncle 34-yr-old Vincente Guerrero-Omana.
“The uncle is actually the brother of the father who is not resident,” explained Sgt. Addison.
The uncle had lived with his brother, wife and nephew in the Fisher Place home.
Neighbors who spoke with NBC-17 said the baby’s father had been deported to Mexico a while back and Vincente had been frequently seen taking care of the child; walking him up and down the street in a stroller.
Those neighbors say they believed Vincente would never harm the toddler; a view shared by police.
“This case didn’t qualify for an amber alert because of the nature of the abduction; its family related. Also they didn’t think the child was in danger,” said Sgt. Addison.
With the last sighting of the two on a DATA bus heading towards the downtown Durham transportation center, investigators are a bit frustrated.
“We are using every resource we can to locate this child,” declared Sgt. Addison.
Because the uncle's last known address was in Durham, investigators have no idea where he might be heading.
That makes them more dependent than usual on the public; hoping someone has spotted the child or the uncle somewhere along the line.

Durham, N.C. — A 1-year-old Durham boy who was reported missing Monday has been found safe and returned to his mother, police said early Tuesday. Authorities wouldn't say how Eliut Briseno was found or if he was with his uncle, Vincente Guerrero-Omana, 34, who was believed to have kidnapped the boy. The two were last seen Sunday in a city bus on Fayetteville Street in Durham.Durham police Sgt. David Addison said police were notified about the possible abduction around 1 p.m. Monday. He said the case did not qualify as an Amber Alert because a family member allegedly took the child and that investigators had no reason to believe the boy was in any immediate danger.http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/8473699/
