Mother accused of physically abusing 2 young children

BELLMEAD - Two Central Texas toddlers are in the hospital after they had been allegedly abused by their mother.Bellmead Police say they were called to a home in the 300 block of Calvary Street on Saturday where a 2-year-old child that had been physically abused was found unresponsive. A 1-year-old was also found to have been physically abused, but the child was alert.

Both children were transported to a local hospital where the 2-year-old is in critical condition, and the 1-year-old's condition is stable.

Their mother, 24-year-old Heather Dawn Norwood, was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child.Police continue to investigate this case.

BELLMEAD (October 19, 2010)-A child found severely abused Saturday in a Bellmead home has died from her injuries.
Allie Jo Norwood, 2, was pronounced dead Sunday evening at Scott & White Hospital in Temple and her body was sent to Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, in Dallas, for autopsy.

A spokesman for the Institute told News 10 the autopsy was ordered by Bell County Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield.

The child's mother, Heather Norwood, 24, remained in custody in the McLennan County Jail Tuesday morning in lieu of $50,000 bond on a charge of injury to a child, a 1st Degree felony.

A second female child, age 1, was hospitalized in stable condition on Monday.

Bellmead officers and medical response personnel were sent Saturday to the 300 block of Calvary St. where they found a 2-year-old unresponsive.

Officers determined Allie Jo Norwood had suffered physical abuse and she was taken to a local hospital via ambulance.

The 1-year-old also was found to have suffered abuse but the infant was responsive and alert.

Font Size: WACO (October 19, 2010)—Less than two days after a badly abused Bellmead toddler died in a local hospital, capital murder charges were filed Tuesday against the girl’s mother and grandmother, Heather Norwood, 24, and Michelle Jackson.

The baby’s grandfather, David Jackson, was charged with failure to report injury to a child.

Norwood was arrested over the weekend and the Jacksons were arrested on Tuesday.

Norwood was originally charged with injury to a child, but the charge was upgraded Tuesday to capital murder and she was ordered held without bond.

Allie Jo Norwood, 2, was pronounced dead Sunday evening at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, a day after Bellmead police found her unresponsive Saturday at her home in the 300 block of Calvary Street.

According to the affidavits submitted for the arrest warrants, Michelle Jackson lifted the toddler by her throat and then slammed the girl to the floor while Norwood stood by.

A second girl, age 1, remained hospitalized in stable condition on Monday

David Jackson, 56, was released from custody Tuesday evening after he posted a $4,000 bond on a two-count charge of failure to report injury to a child. A vigil was held Monday evening at the Bellmead Civic Center in remembrance of little Allie Jo Norwood.Police said the two year old girl was brutally murdered by her mother and grandmother last week. Her 1-year-old sister was also injured in the attack.Monday the city of Bellmead joined with the Bikers Against Child Abuse to honor the 2-year-old victim."This community is healing, this was a tragedy that shouldn't have happened," Lany "Pops" Neighbors, Bikers Against Child Abuse, said. The mother and grandparents of a badly abused Waco-area toddler were indicted Wednesday in the death of the 2-year-old girl.



WACO (January 12, 2011)—The McLennan County Grand Jury returned indictments Wednesday charging injury to a child against the mother, grandmother and grandfather of a badly abused Bellmead toddler who died in October in a local hospital.

Heather Norwood, 24, and Michelle Berger, 45, who were originally charged with capital murder in the death of Allie Jo Norwood, 2, were named in indictments charging injury to a child causing seriously bodily injury and injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission.




The baby's grandfather, David Jackson, 56, was indicted on one count of injury to a child causing serious bodily injured by omission.

He was originally charged with failure to report injury to a child.

Allie Jo Norwood, 2, was pronounced dead at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, a day after Bellmead police found her unconscious and not breathing at her home in the 300 block of Calvary Street.

According to the affidavits submitted for the arrest warrants, Norwood "repeatedly struck her two year old."

Then she stood by as Michelle Berger grabbed the toddler by her throat and choked her, "causing the victim to turn red in the face," the affidavit said.

Then Berger "slammed the victim on the floor," the affidavit said.

"As a result of this the victim quit breathing and was later resuscitated by emergency medical personnel," the affidavit said.

A second girl, age 1, was also hospitalized in stable condition after the incident.

Three people charged with the October 2010 death of a toddler were sentenced for the crime Monday.

2-year-old Allie Jo Norwood died just days after she was found unresponsive at a home on Calvary Street.
A 1-year-old child was also found, and showed signs of child abuse.


Heather Norwood plead guilty to two counts of injury to a child and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.


The toddlers relatives, Michelle Berger and David Jackson also plead guilty.


Berger was sentenced to 50 years for one count and 10 years for another.


Jackson was sentenced 10 years for each count, totaling 20 years.

Michelle Jackson faces the same charges.


David Jackson is charged failure to report child abuse.


Its unclear how they're related to the child.
