Authorities investigating child’s death
November 20, 2010 at 8:53 p.m.
Authorities are trying to determine what killed a 1-year-old girl whose father told investigators she fell off a counter in the kitchen on Friday.
Dead is Kamir Strawder, who lived in Arredondo Estates off Archer Road with her father, Christopher Strawder, and her mother, Katrina Thomas, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Art Forgey said.
At about 6:40 a.m. Friday, deputies went to the home regarding a medical emergency.
“The dad said he went into the kitchen to make breakfast. He put the girl on the counter and left, then he heard a loud thud,” Forgey said. “He went back into the kitchen and found the baby on the floor. She started convulsing, and he called 911.”
Kamir was taken to Shands at the University of Florida with a traumatic brain injury, and she died there about 5:40 p.m., Forgey said.
“Deputies are with the medical examiner this morning to try to determine if there was foul play or not,” Forgey said Saturday.

Hello, McFly...anybody in there?
Earth to Chris, Earth to Chris come in please.
You do not set a one year old on a counter and walk away...dumb ass!
~ Hard to say but if the counter was of average height and weight of Kam was (21 lbs) she would have had to go head first from a much higher distance to create a life ending brain injury....I am not a forensic pathologist just so you do not think this is a professional opinion from Dr Perper or something

A Gainesville man has been accused of killing Ka’Mia C. Strawder, a 1-year-old baby who died in 2010 of a severe brain injury.
Christopher Jarvis Strawder, 24, was arrested early Monday and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, records show. Ka’Mia died at Shands at the University of Florida on Nov. 19, 2010.
Strawder is listed on Ka’Mia’s birth certificate as her father, but in his report on the death, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Detective Charles Beveridge noted that Strawder is not the child’s biological father.
According to Beveridge’s report, the child’s fatal injury happened at an Arredondo Estates home off Southwest Archer Road where Ka’Mia lived with her parents.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the home at about 6:40 a.m. for a medical emergency.
Strawder’s initial statement to deputies was that, while he was in the kitchen making breakfast, he put Ka’Mia on the counter. He said he then left the room to get her drinking cup and then heard a loud thud. When he returned to the kitchen, the baby was on the floor convulsing, and he called 911 for help.
The baby’s mother, Katrina Thomas, had already left for work when the child was injured, according to Strawder’s statement.
Ka’Mia was taken to Shands at the University of Florida, where she was pronounced dead about 11 hours later of a traumatic brain injury, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The Medical Examiner’s Office determined Strawder’s account was not consistent with the child’s fatal injuries, which were described as “abusive head trauma.”
The medical examiner’s final autopsy report in the case was completed on Nov. 22, 2011, and received by the Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 30, according to sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Todd Kelly.
Larry Bedore, director of Investigations for the Medical Examiner’s Office, said it took the agency a year to complete its autopsy report because “a series of consultations were needed.”
Beveridge’s report noted that, based on Strawder’s story, Ka’Mia fell from a height of 33.75 inches onto “a vinyl kitchen floor with plywood as subflooring. There was no blood at the scene.”
During an autopsy at the Medical Examiner’s Office, Dr. Martha J. Burt determined the probable cause of Ka’Mia’s death was blunt head injuries and that her death was a homicide.
A member of the Child Protection Team also reviewed the case.
Dr. Debra Esernio-Jenssen concluded that Ka’Mia’s injuries could be considered abusive head trauma. She also wrote that Strawder’s account of what happened “is not consistent with the child’s clinical presentation and severe neurological devastation.”
Strawder was being held at the Alachua County jail on Monday. His bond was set at $1.2 million.
