Friday, December 10, 2010
A 2-month-old Perris baby girl is recovering after being burned Thursday with scalding hot bath water, authorities said. The infant suffered third-degree burns to the lower part of her body after being placed in a bathroom sink under running hot water and will likely need skin grafts due to the severity of the burns, said Sgt. Patrick Chavez with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.According to Chavez, the baby was burned earlier that day when her parents, 18-year-old Jiovanni McMillan of San Jacinto and a 17-year-old girl, had given her a bath. Chavez said McMillan placed the baby in the bathroom sink, turned the water on and looked away. According to Chavez, the baby began screaming because of the hot water.McMillan and the 17-year-old did not seek medical attention for the baby until some of her skin began to peel off hours later, Chavez said.McMillan was arrested and booked at Robert Presely Detention Center in Riverside for child abuse and the 17-year-old girl was released to her parents and is pending charges. The baby was transferred from Kaiser Hospital in Moreno Valley and taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for further treatment. The Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident and is urging anyone with information to contact Investigator Hernandez at 951-245-3300.
