Police say mom did nothing to protect 15-year-old daughter
A second arrest has been made in a case involving a 40-year-old man accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
On Monday, Logansport police arrested the victim’s mother, a 38-year-old Logansport woman, on a charge of neglect of a dependent.
Detective Brad Miller said the mother admitted to knowing that Jeffrey Lee Bixler of Logansport was having sexual intercourse with her teenage daughter. She did not report the alleged crimes to police nor did she remove her daughter from the situation, Miller said.
Police arrested Bixler Saturday on a charge of sexual misconduct with a minor, a class C felony.
Police say Bixler, who was serving a four-year sentence on in-home detention for nonsupport of a dependent, confessed that he knew the girl’s age and that he knew any sexual acts with her were against the law.
A police report showed that the woman and her daughter had been kicked out of Emmaus Mission Center after an outburst by the woman’s husband. All three moved in with Bixler, who the mother had met over the Internet.
Bixler allegedly committed sexual acts with the teen, who reportedly revealed the information to her mother. The teen also told her aunt, who contacted Bixler’s probation officer with Cass/Pulaski Community Corrections.
The girl’s mother reportedly told police that she did not move out of Bixler’s residence because she and her family had nowhere else to go.
Child Protective Services took custody of the girl, according to a police report.
Both the mother and Bixler remained in the Cass County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.
Miller said he expected more charges to be filed against Bixler, who is also looking at violations of his in-home detention because of the new charge and the nearly $2,000 he owes in program fees.
If convicted of the class C felony, Bixler faces up to eight years in prison.
The girl’s mother could get up to three years in prison if found guilty on the felony neglect charge.
