"Newborn Jane Doe" - Found deceased in box - Phoenix AZ/ McAllen TX
Phoenix Police believe 'Baby Jane,' an unidentified baby girl whose
body was found in a shipping box in Texas on Thursday, was left in a
clothes donation bin in the valley. The baby's body was
apparently wrapped in a towel, put in a box, and left in a clothing
donation bin -- there are 400 donations bins scattered across the
valley. "We may be able to narrow down some of these locations,
but it will certainly be challenging for us," says Phoenix Police Sgt.
Steve Martos. Police believe this box was picked up between
December 8 and 12 at one of these drop sites. They say the box was then
packed into a semi truck and took off for McAllen, Texas on December 13.
The delivery arrived in McAllen on December 15. It was not until
Thursday that employees began sorting the donations and discovered the
infant's body with the umbilical cord still attached. An autopsy
was performed on Friday, and the medical examiner determined the baby
was full-term. However, it was unclear if the child was stillborn or
born alive. A cause of death is undetermined. The autopsy found that the child was white or Hispanic. If the child was stillborn, Arizona law still requires proper disposal of the body. Failing to do so is a felony. Anyone
with information is asked to call police. Police hope someone with a
tip will help them crack this case -- which they admit will not be easy.
