"Newborn" WILLIAMS (2010) - Phoenix AZ
PHOENIX - Prosecutors are weighing charges against a Phoenix mother
accused of leaving her newborn in a trash can.
Police believe a 24-year-old woman delivered her baby early Monday
in south Phoenix, then left the newborn infant in a curbside trash bin
two houses away from her family's residence.
Detectives seized the green city of Phoenix trash bin and other evidence.
Police Sgt. Trent Crump said if the child was alive when it was
placed in the trash bin, the woman could be charged with a homicide.
The woman's family told detectives they were unaware of her
pregnancy and that she didn't physically show any signs of pregnancy.
Police did not identify the mother.

Re: "Newborn" WILLIAMS (2010) - Phoenix AZ
The 24-year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of first-degree
murder after her newborn baby was discovered earlier this week in a
trash can, police said today.
Brittany Williams was arrested earlier today after Phoenix homicide
detectives developed probable cause that Williams, who delivered the
child early Monday morning at her family's south Phoenix home, knew her
child was alive before the baby was dumped in the trash.
Crump said the mother was booked this morning at a Maricopa County
jail. She is charged with first-degree murder through Arizona's felony
murder law, he said, because one count of alleged child abuse led to
the baby's death.
Williams delivered the baby herself at her parents' home in the 2000
block of West Atlanta Avenue around 2-3 a.m. Her family never knew she
was pregnant, according to police.
Based on interviews with Williams and the family, detectives believe
Williams told her family they could find the newborn in a curbside
trash can two houses down at a vacant property. Williams' sister
recovered the baby and the family tried to rush to revive the child, to
no avail.
Investigators developed probable cause for Williams' arrest based on
discovering the woman "spent some time in her residence with the child
prior to taking it to a vacant house," Crump said.

PHOENIX — A woman accused of dumping her newborn baby in a trash can last year has been convicted of negligent child abuse.
But a Maricopa County Superior Court jury was hung
Thursday on a second-degree murder charge against 25-year-old Brittany
Williams.
Prosecutors say Williams will be sentenced June 16 on the child abuse conviction and face a July 5 retrial on the murder charge.
Williams was arrested in early January 2010 after
Phoenix homicide detectives developed probable cause that she knew her
baby was alive before it was put in the trash.
Authorities say Williams had delivered the child days
earlier at her family's south Phoenix home although her family never
knew she was pregnant.
Police say she originally was charged with first-degree murder through Arizona's felony murder law.http://www.dailyjournal.net/view/story/030ceb6fbf8f44cca9ae6af0ac9a4eb2/AZ--Phoenix-Baby-In-Trash/

Re: "Newborn" WILLIAMS (2010) - Phoenix AZ
A Phoenix mom who put her newborn baby in a trash can last year --
killing the baby -- has been found guilty of second-degree murder, court officials tell New Times.
In January 2010, Brittany Williams delivered a baby in her family's Phoenix home.
According to authorities, none of her family members knew she was pregnant.
Rather than take the baby to a hospital, Williams put the newborn in the trash.
Williams later told family members she'd delivered a child and that they could find it in a trash can in front of
a vacant house down the street from their home.
Family members rushed to revive the baby but were unsuccessful.
Williams initially was charged with first-degree murder and child abuse for the baby's death, but the murder
charge was later reduced to second-degree murder.
Williams was found guilty in May of child abuse, but jurors were hung on the murder charge and a retrial was ordered.
The issue was whether the baby was
alive when Williams put it in the trash. At the time of death,
police say, the baby was alive and that Williams had "spent
some time in her residence with the child before taking it to a vacant house."
Jurors in Williams' second murder trial concluded that the baby was born alive -- and that Williams is a murderer.
Williams' sentencing is scheduled for September 23.
