Parents searching for runaway Springville boy
Friends and family members of a Springville boy are searching Utah Valley after his parents reported that he ran away from home.
Chad Ray Stilson was last seen around noon on Saturday. Stilson's mother, Vicki McGarry, said she checked on him in the morning, but later he must have snuck out of the house.
McGarry said that police and up to 30 other people have been searching for him since. There have been reports of Stilson being seen near Utah Lake and in the mountains, but nothing has been confirmed.
Stilson is 12 years old, has brown hair that comes over his ears, is around 5 feet 2 inches tall and has blue eyes. McGarry said that the last time he was seen he was wearing black and red shoes, black jeans and a black T-shirt.
According to McGarry, her son has never run away before. She said he may have left because he was grounded for getting in trouble at school.
Those who may have information about Stilson's whereabouts can call Det. Greg Turnbow of the Springville police at (801) 491-5525, or Stilson's father, Dennis Stilson, at (801) 921-2032.

Parents desperate as Springville 12-year-old remains missing
Possibly upset about being grounded, 12-year-old Chad Stilson bolted from his Springville home Saturday. Four days later he remains missing, and his parents are growing desperate.
His father, Dennis Stilson, is using all of the investigative skills he learned as a longtime bounty hunter to supplement Springville police efforts to find the boy, who is now listed as an “endangered runaway.”
There are hopeful signs, however. Chad was seen shortly after running away by a girl who lives near his home, and the same girl has reported having a text message from him.
However, efforts to call Chad’s cell phone come back with messages stating his phone has been turned off; he may be limiting phone use to only outgoing calls.
There also have been sightings of Chad — described as 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes — late last week at Utah Lake, and on Sunday afternoon back in Springville on Canyon Road leading up to Hobble Creek, his father says.
Last week, Chad’s mother, who is divorced from Stilson, was called by school administrators over a complaint the father declined to detail. The outcome, however, was that Chad was grounded for 10 days, Dennis Stilson said.
“This is out of character for him, to leave and be gone so long,” the father says. “He’s a shy kid, not a lot of friends, but a bright kid, very tech-minded.”
On Wednesday, Dennis Stilson had hopes that technological bent may provide important leads to searchers. He was having an expert try to crack the password protections Chad had put on his personal computer.
Chad has taught himself rudimentary programming, and is active in various social networks, so his father hopes the computer — once the passwords are defeated — will reveal important contacts who may be able to help locate him.
If anyone sees Chad or has information that might lead to his location, call Springville Police at 801-491-5525.

Parents desperate to find missing 12-year-old boy
SPRINGVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A mother and father are worried about their missing son. At this point, Springville police have no reason to suspect foul play, but his parents fear five days is just too long for their boy to be on his own.
Chad Stilson is just 12-years old. He's a 7th grader at Mapleton Junior High.
Last Saturday, Chad defied his mother who had grounded him by sneaking out of the house to visit a friend. He was in trouble, but his Mom, Vicki McGarry said that was no reason to run away. "We had a great night Friday night," she explained. "He went to bed laughing. I got up and checked on him, he was sleeping. The next time I went down, he was gone. He was in the middle of a game on his laptop. It was still open. He was just gone."
The family confirmed that Chad had gone to a friend's house on Saturday, but beyond that McGarry said, "I know nothing beyond that."
There was an attempt by Chad to make a call on his cell phone. That call was unanswered, but investigators determined it had come from west of town near Utah Lake.
After that, there was a sighting in east Springville by a girl who later saw Chad's picture at school and was positive it was him.
Tantalizing clues, but they have so far led nowhere.
"We knew he left on his own accord," said Chad's father, Dennis Stilson. "But it's been too long now. I'm scared and worried. He didn't have a coat." McGarry added, "My nephew thought he had a backpack. So later I went down to search and the backpack was gone, but that's the only thing."
Though divorced, the parents are united in their concern for Chad. Mother has been advised to stay home -- close to the phone. Dad, who at one time was a bounty hunter, has been hitting the pavement tracking down leads. "I've talked to the authorities and generally they say 99.9% come home within 24 hours. That's the big concern. Five days is a long time for a 12-year old boy. He's not a big, tough, street kid."
McGarry said, "I want my baby home. There's nothing he could have done in the past that's worth this. He's not in trouble. We love him. We just want him home."

Saturday search for missing Springville boy
SPRINGVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Last Saturday Chad Stilson defied his mother by sneaking out of his house. Although there have been a handful of possible sightings around Springville, one week later his family, friends and even strangers are organizing a search looking for a 12-year old boy who has seemingly disappeared.
Organizing the search is Garrett Bardsley's father, Kevin Bardsley. Garrett disappeared from a campground in the High Uintas back in 2004 and was never found. His father has taken the experiences learned from his personal tragedy and uses them to help other families with missing children.
"We are going to make tomorrow a big day if we can," Bardsley told ABC4 Friday evening.
The search for Chad Stilson and organized by the Garrett Bardsley Foundation will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the LDS Chapel at 1230 South 400 East in Springville.
Any volunteers who have worked with the Garrett Bardsley Foundation staff previously are asked to meet at 8 a.m.
There may be some hiking during the search, but the majority of the effort will be handing out flyers door-to-door.
All volunteers will be immensely appreciated. Search organizers say the need all of the help they can get.

Missing Springville boy returns home
SPRINGVILLE — A 12-year-old Springville boy who had been missing for more than a week returned home Monday, his father confirmed.
"I just got the call at 7 o'clock this morning," Dennis Stilson said, noting that he was feeling "better now" that his boy, Chad, had returned.
Chad Stilson had last been seen Jan. 22 when he left home after being grounded for getting into some trouble at school. The boy crawled out of his bedroom window around midnight and hadn't been seen since, though some people reported seeing someone who fit his description near Utah Lake and in Hobble Creek Canyon.
Dennis Stilson said the boy was "fine," but didn't explain where he had been.
"He doesn't want to talk," he said.
Chad's return follows a weekend search involving hundreds of volunteers who went door-to-door asking residents if they had seen Chad and asking them to keep an eye out.

More questions than answers in case of Springville boy
SPRINGVILLE -- The father of a 12-year-old
Springville boy missing for 10 days said his son reportedly ate out
trash containers while he was away.
There were still more questions than answers Tuesday following Chad Stilson's return to his home.
Chad was last seen Jan. 22 when he left home after being grounded for getting into some trouble at school.
Last weekend, hundreds of volunteers went door-to-door passing out
fliers and looking for Stilson. It was an effort organized by the
Garrett Bardsley Foundation.
In addition, electronic billboards featuring Chad went up in several places along the I-15 corridor in Salt Lake City.
The search turned up nothing, but the boy returned home Monday morning.
Dennis Stilson, Chad's father, said his son was taken to the hospital,
where doctors noted he had lost some weight but was otherwise given a
clean bill of health.
But since returning home, Stilson said Chad had not talked about where
he had been or what he had been doing, and his family hasn't pressed.
"We don't know yet. We're trying to put it together," he said. "That's
on all our minds right now. We're trying to get him comfortable and open
up. We don't want to push him too hard. Kids that age don't leave home
for 10 days. We still don 't know (where he was). We're working on it."
Stilson said about the most he has gotten from his son is that he ate
canned food and out of trash bins while he was missing. Stilson said he
was going to let the "professionals," such as social workers, handle the
situation from here and not try to create additional problems by
pressing Chad for answers himself.
"Obviously he has some issues," he said.
