Two Kanawha County women charged with child neglect

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Kanawha County women were charged with child neglect
in unrelated incidents during the weekend.
Paramedics and Kanawha County sheriff's deputies responded to a house on
Big Tyler Road in Cross Lanes at about 2 p.m. Friday after getting a
call that there might be an intoxicated woman with a young baby in the
residence, according to Lt. Bryan Stover of the Sheriff's Department.
Paramedics got there first, Stover said, but couldn't get anyone to
answer the door. Stover said they could hear a child crying inside.
Deputy J.S. Snyder then arrived, but couldn't get anyone to answer the
door either, Stover said. Snyder was able to get into the house and
allegedly found an 11-month-old boy crying in his crib. Stover said his
mother, Tifany Hodges, 28, was allegedly passed out on the floor.
Stover said the house was dirty and in disarray, and dirty diapers were
scattered throughout the house. He said paramedics were able to wake
Hodges, who allegedly told police she had been drinking.
The child was placed in the custody of relatives, and Hodges was taken
outside to be put in a patrol car, Stover said. Hodges allegedly kicked
Snyder in the legs on the way to the car and allegedly kicked him in the
chest while she was being put in the back seat of the car.
Hodges was charged with felony child neglect and battery on a police
officer. She was in the South Central Regional Jail on Monday in lieu of
$50,000 bond.
----
On Saturday, Stover said deputies went to a house in Rand at about 1:40
a.m. after getting a report about a woman and a 2-year-old sitting on the porch.
Stover said deputies found Lora Mae Haynes, 21, of Charleston, sitting
on the porch with her child in 36-degree weather. Stover said the child
was not dressed properly for the cold, and it wasn't Haynes' house.
Stover said Haynes appeared to be disoriented and intoxicated. She
allegedly told deputies she rode the bus from Charleston to Rand to
visit her mother and couldn't remember where she lived. Haynes allegedly
wandered around Rand for a few hours looking for her mother's house.
The child was turned over to Haynes' mother.
Haynes was charged with child neglect.
She was in the South Central Regional Jail on Monday in lieu of $5,000 bond.
