Sheriffs Deputies Search for Missing Child

Grandmother Took Off With Girl

PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Archuletta County Sheriff's deputies were searching
for Jayleigh Mieritz early Monday morning.Deputies
said her grandmother, Joan Mieritz took her from Colorado Springs to
Pagosa Springs. She filed for custody but the courts wouldn't let her.
Jayleigh's mother and legal guardian Tamika Ward went to Pagosa Springs
Sunday night to pick up the 6-year-old, but the grandmother Joan Mieritz
wouldn't give her up. Ward called sheriff's deputies and Joan Mieritz
took off with the girl in a 2005 black Kia sedan.Joan is described as a 65-year-old female,
5 foot 8 and weighs 160 pounds. Joan Mieretz has short brown hair and blue eyes.
Jayleigh is 6 years old, 3 foot 8 and 42 pounds with long curly brown hair.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Major Crime Unit is issuing a missing child alert.
They say 6 year-old Jayleigh Mieritz was taken by her grandmother,
Joan Mieritz, from the Colorado Springs area to the Pagosa Springs area.
During visitation, the grandmother filed for custody of the child,
which was denied by the courts.
Jayleigh's mother and legal custodian, Tamika Ward, went to Pagosa
Springs to pick up Jayleigh, but the grandmother refused to let the
child go. Deputies were called and the grandmother left in 2005 2-door
black Kia sedan, license plate 090OHF with the child.
Authorities say Jayleigh is 3'8" with long, curly brown hair and
brown eyes. It's not known what she was wearing when she was taken.
Joan Miertitz is described as 5'8" with short brown hair and blue eyes. She weighs 160 pounds and is 65 years-old.

the mother, Tamika Ward, and Joan led to Joan fleeing with Jayleigh.
Joan had taken Jayleigh to Pagosa Springs for an extended vacation and
