Dad charged after baby drowns in bathtub; alcohol allegedly involved

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City, Mo., man faces charges after his 10-month-old son drowned while bathing with him last year.
Charles M. Wells, 35, was charged Tuesday with involuntary manslaughter after blood tests showed he was legally drunk in the hours after the infant's death.
Wells admitted to officers that he had been using marijuana and methadone, and that he was an alcoholic.
According to court documents, Wells said he drank half a pint of vodka the night of August 10, 2011. That same night, he said he decided to give the child a bath.
Witnesses said they heard Wells yelling about 45 minutes later, and that they saw him giving the child CPR.
Wells told officers he fell asleep after getting into the bathtub with his son. When he woke up, he found the infant floating in the tub.
The 10-month-old was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Hospital officials said that water was coming out of the child's airway when they were trying to save him.
Wells is being held at the Platte County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
