5-Month-Old In Critical Condition; Stepfather Charged With Child Abuse

A 5-month-old baby clings to life in a Denver hospital, and the person allegedly responsible for putting him there is the child's stepfather.

Philip Jiron sits in the Pueblo County Jail after he allegedly slapped and abused his 5-month-old stepson so badly, the infant is in critical condition.

According to arrest papers obtained by 11 News, the little boy is suffering from severe head trauma. Doctors say the infant has two skull fractures and will only move him after he is in stable condition.

The mother says the couple and her three kids moved to Pueblo at the end of July.

Police tell us this is not the first time Jiron has been in trouble with authorities; court documents say Jiron has a history of violence and child abuse. Arrest papers also say the domestic violence was so bad, the mom told her 10-year-old daughter a secret phrase and when she said it, the girl needed to call police.

Jiron faces charges of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injuries. He is being held on a $300,000 bond.

The case remains under investigation.
