Poster's Note: I held off a few days before posting this story. My reasoning was that this was just a young man who went off on a bender. It woulld now appear that there's more to this.

This afternoon volunteers met at the Superior Inn picking up flyers
to distribute around Superior and Duluth. They set out on foot,
knocking on doors and leaving information about Sly on the windshields
of cars. The flyers contain all the information folks need to know
about who to call if they have any tips about his disappearance. The
family also stressed that all of the tips would be anonymous.


Eighteen year old Sylvester McCurry Jr. has been missing for 5 days
now. He was last seen at Stargate Nightclub on Sunday. Since Tuesday
groups have been searching for him and any clues.
His step-mom Gina Martin says they won't give up until they find
him. "We want everyone to know that we're not giving up because he is
out there somewhere I know it, I feel it in my heart that he is. God
has a plan to help us bring him back and we're doing everything we can
think of to do that," said Martin.
The family is offering a reward of $50,000 dollars. The reward is
made possible by local donations, as well as family, friends, and the
NAACP out of the Twin Cities.
Sly's mother Tammy feels there is still hope. Police on both sides
of the bridge continue to work on the investigation. Currently they are
following up on older leads and tips, some of which they have even
received on facebook. Sly's mom is pleading for her sons safe return.
"You know Sly if you're watching we're looking for you, you know. .
come home, we all love you, your family and friends. We have so many
people looking for you right now," said Carter.
The family will resume their search Saturday morning.

Duluth police are seeking the public’s help in finding an
18-year-old man from the Chester Park neighborhood last seen on Sunday
night in Superior. Sylvester McCurry, 18, went to the Stargate
Night Club with his brother and bumped into friends there.
The Duluth
East High School student is believed to have left the club at about
10:45 p.m. Sunday without telling anyone where he was headed and has
not been seen since that time.McCurry is a 5-foot-11
light-skinned black man who weighs about 150 pounds and has short brown

The search for 18-year old Sylvester McCurry who's been missing for nearly a week now continues.
Family and friends are not giving up yet and local authorities continue to follow up on any leads.
The area in Superior where he was last seen was searched earlier this week.
Duluth Police Officer Brad Wick says there are no additional searches planned at this time.
Investigators did spend time distributing flyers to the DTA and local cab companies yesterday.
A new attempt to locate McCurry is boldly displayed along an electronic billboard along Central Entrance in Duluth.
Family and friends want to make sure folks don't forget his face and continue in their desperate search.

more than a week since his disappearance friends, family and community
members held a prayer vigil at the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle.
More than fifty people came to offer their prayers and words of encouragement during this difficult ordeal.

lord for help and encourage the family spend time with the family, and
pray that's the main thing."
Community Members,
friends and family have mounted a massive search effort in the hopes of
finding a clue to the whereabouts of McCurry, but so far all they're
finding are dead ends. Yet the people that know McCurry the best are
still clinging to the hope of seeing him again.

friend Jennifer Couillard said "I think everybody has their moments of,
moments of despair and dread but also moments of encouragement."
McCurry's girlfriend Grace Buck has been searching for her boyfriend since he was reported missing.
She says spending time with friends and the people that care for McCurry is helping her deal with his disappearance

helps a lot, but other than that you have to keep trying."

50-thousand dollar reward is being offered for any information
regarding the whereabouts of eighteen year old Sylvester McCurry.

Police dogs added their efforts to the search for a missing Duluth teen today.
It's been over a week since 18–year old Sylvester McCurry disappeared from the Stargate Nightclub in Superior.
Despite the passage of time rescue workers, friends, and family haven't given up hope as LeAnn Wallace reports.
Search
and rescue squads are once again sweeping the area of Stargate
Nightclub...searching for anything that might lead to the whereabouts
of 18–year old Sylvester McCurry.
"It's already been
gone through I've been told with searchers on foot but the dogs can
obviously smell things different than people can see. So it's a little
bit more thorough of a search right now," said Dave Drozdowski, of
Saint Louis County Search and Rescue and the Duluth Police Department.
6–year old Abe is certified in human tracking and human remains recovery.
"For him, this is just kind of a big game but we know it's serious."
When Abe finds something of interest, he sits down and the area is more thoroughly searched.
He did show interest in some spots Tuesday morning...but the search came up empty.
McCurry is described as a light skinned black male, about 5–feet–11 inches tall, weighing around 150 pounds.
He was last seen wearing jeans and Nike tennis shoes.
Authorities say they haven't gotten any new leads recently...but say the search will continue as will the prayers.
"It's
been a heartache...a lot of tears...but a lot of encouragement too.
We're still believing that we'll see Sylvester again," said family
friend Jennifer Couillard.

On Tuesday, Dave Drozdowski and his yellow labs were ready to get down to business.
"The dogs can obviously smell things differently than people can see," he said. "It's just a more thorough search right now."
Dave is a member of the St.
Louis County Rescue Squad, which is helping in the search for
Sylvester "Sly" McCurry. Dave's two dogs, Abe and Otter, are trained to
locate anything from a small trace of blood to a body. He uses one dog
at a time during a search.
"If I tell him to check something, he'll check it a little closer," said Dave.
Officials say they have no evidence that leads them
to believe McCurry is dead, but they want to search again. Dave was
assigned to the area behind Stargate Night Club, the last place McCurry
was seen.
Dave says he can tell by his dogs' behavior whether they're following a scent.
"You can kind of read the dog," he said. "He'll get real excited, but his final alert would be to sit."
Quickly into the search, Abe honed in on a house about 100 feet from Stargate.
Dave says it was obvious Abe smelled something suspicious. As he's trained to do, he sat down.
Seeing Abe's reaction, Dave brought his second dog over to the same area. Watch the video of Otter's reaction.
The dogs' reactions sparks Dave's interest, but he
was quick to admit they could be smelling something unrelated to Sly's
disappearance.
"Animals are wrong sometimes," he said.
Dave said there were plenty of other explanations for his dogs' behavior.
"I'm just throwing out a scenario...but if someone
got in a fight and got a bloody nose and sat here, [Abe] would find
that blood," he said. "So you never know if it's something or nothing."
The house was vacant, but officers were able to
locate the owner, who came to unlock the door. Police and the dogs
searched inside and found nothing. Coincidentally, the owner of the
house says a man died of natural causes inside several years ago.
So with no sign of Sly, the search teams continued
on. They planned on searching other areas in the north end of Superior,
hoping somewhere else might yield more clues.

said. “It’s not helping find him by any means.”And it’s hurting McCurry’s friends and family, who have received text messages and phone calls alerting them to rumors.“It’s
a little bit irritating that people would just make things up about
somebody’s life,” said Couillard, 18, a 2009 Central High School
graduate and a certified nursing assistant in Duluth.McCurry has
been friends with Couillard for several years and has lived with his
family since August. A tightly knit relationship has formed between the
family and McCurry.Jennifer Couillard, Keegan’s mother, has had
a hard time sleeping, likening the rumors to “torment.” She’s thought
about taking her kids’ phones away and keeping them out of school so
they don’t hear what’s being spread.“I feel bad that I couldn’t
protect Sylvester from whatever happened to him, and now I feel like I
can’t protect my kids and family from these rumors,” she said.Police have followed dozens of leads during the past two weeks, “all of which basically fizzled out,” La Lor said.Dogs
searched the area of his disappearance again Tuesday, interviews have
been conducted and phone records searched. The St. Louis River bay area
was searched by plane, and dogs and people searched the waterfront. No
concrete information regarding his whereabouts or his disappearance has
turned up.The investigation will remain open until McCurry is
found, La Lor said, and “as long as we still have leads to work on it
will remain actively open.”Keegan Couillard recounted on Friday
the day McCurry disappeared. He went to the Superior Inn at noon, and
McCurry was dropped off at 3 p.m. They meant to have friends come to
the room, but that fell through. McCurry couldn’t swim because his
finger was bandaged and in a splint. He was in a good mood, Couillard
said, but was tired and napped for a while. They walked to Stargate
around 10 p.m. and separated inside. Club video shows McCurry leaving
at 11 p.m.Couillard said he heard from a friend that McCurry’s
finger was bleeding through the bandage while at the club. When he left
at midnight, he called McCurry’s cell phone and got no answer. He
assumed that his girlfriend had picked him up, or he’d left with other
friends.The next day, a school holiday, he called McCurry a few
more times and checked with McCurry’s girlfriend and other friends. He
returned home and told his parents he didn’t know where McCurry was.McCurry
had told the Couillards he was staying at the Superior Inn that night,
but he told them it was for a birthday party. He respected Paul and
Jennifer Couillard and liked having someone to be accountable to, they

Sly McCurry’s mother said she wants the world to know she’s not giving up on finding her son.Tammy
Carter and others of McCurry’s family and friends gathered Sunday night
at the Stargate Nightclub in Superior — four weeks to the night that
Sly disappeared without a trace.“We’re still looking for him.
We’re still trying to raise awareness that he’s still missing and we
still need help finding him,” Carter said.McCurry, 18, a Duluth East senior, was escorted out of the back door of the Stargate Nightclub at about 11 p.m. on Jan. 17. Hehasn’t
been seen since. McCurry and friends were attending a popular Sunday
night no-alcohol teen dance at the club aimed at 16- to 20-year-olds.A
police dog traced his scent back to a motel McCurry had planned to stay
at that night, but Sly never made it into the room. His friend said
they had been drinking earlier, which is why bar officials said he was
ejected from the club.Police have had no major leads in the case.Carter said she hopes also to raise awareness among teenagers to always travel with friends.“We’re trying to advocate safety for teenagers at these dance events. They need to look out for each other,” she said.

While authorities and volunteers are STILL looking for eighteen year old
Sylvester McCurry, family and friends continue to pray for his safe
return.
Today at the Caribou Coffee in Canal Park, bracelets saying
"Sylvester McCurry" and "Praying for a Safe Return" were sold for three
dollars.
All of the money raised will go towards the continued
efforts to find McCurry.


McCurry was last seen January seventeenth after leaving
Stargate Night Club in Superior.
Carly Johnson, a friend of the McCurry family was there to
help sell the bracelets.
She says the bracelets are aimed to help in the search
efforts, but the best thing anyone can do at this point...is simply
remember.
"Don't forget about him. You know Sly, he was a great
person; very outgoing and sweet from the heart. A lot of us are missing
him very deeply. So any little bit helps and definitely keep the
awareness out there and just don't forget about it."
Anyone with any information about his disappearance or
possible whereabouts is asked to call the police.

t’s been nearly 4 months since anyone has seen Sylvester "Sly"
McCurry. The 18-year-old Duluth East High School student disappeared on
January 17th.
“The last we see of him is going out the back door, walking down the
alley,” says Sylvester McCurry’s mother, Tammy Carter. Surveillance
video of McCurry leaving the Stargate Night Club in Superior on January
17th is the last Tammy Carter has seen of her son. “We have a lot of
missing pieces to what happened to him after Stargate,” says Carter.
Nearly four months to the date of his disappearance, police and Sly's
family are no closer to finding him. “They can't pinpoint anything
because there is no actual evidence saying he's here or they found
something. There’s nothing,” says Grace Buck, Sly’s girlfriend, “there
are so many different possibilities as to what could have happened that
night.”
“You don't know if he's with somebody, you don't know if someone's
holding him against his will, you don't know the dark thoughts that you
think and if those are true, you don't know anything,” says Sly’s
sister, Ana Gamber.
One thing Sly's family does know is that he wouldn't run away.
“People think ‘oh he just ran away’ or he wanted to get away for a
while,” says Gamber, “he didn't run away. It's serious, it’s just like
as important as a child who went missing, it is someone's child, it's my
mother's baby, and it’s my brother.”
Sly's family continues to ask for the public's help. “I just love sly
so much, if anyone knows anything, please, please come forward,” pleas
his mother.
The family is encouraging residents to search their property, yards,
tall grass areas, buildings and even old cars parked outside of their
houses. With the fishing season starting this weekend, Sly's family is
asking fishermen for their help too.
“They've been looking at the waters and that's why we've asked the
fishermen to make sure they keep their eyes open for anything,” says
Gamber.
Sly was last seen wearing blue jeans, a gray fleece jacket, blue and
white polo shirt, white Nike shoes with a Sony cell phone and a wallet.

There is still no definitive information that has led investigators
to the whereabouts of McCurry, according to a news release issues Friday
evening. However, information gathered at the start of the
investigation indicated McCurry was intoxicated on the night he
disappeared. Investigators have considered the possibility that
McCurry may have attempted to cross the St. Louis River or harbor in an
attempt to get back to Duluth. Extensive searches have been conducted of
the river, harbor and piers in the area. As the investigation
approaches the four-month mark, police are asking anglers and other
citizens out enjoying the nicer weather to be on the lookout for
anything that may provide clues to McCurry’s disappearance. Additionally,
citizens in Superior's North End neighborhoods are asked to check any
outbuildings or other areas where McCurry may have sought shelter.
Owners of buildings that may be vacant are also being asked to check
their buildings for anything that may provide assistance in this
investigation. McCurry is described as a light skinned black male
with short curly brown/black hair and brown eyes. His is about
5-foot-10 and 150-160 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, white Nike
shoes, a polo-type striped shirt, and what is believed to be a gray
fleece-type jacket at the time of his disappearance. He also had a

The family of an 18-year-old missing man from Duluth says his body
has been found, not far from the last spot he was seen alive.
Sylvester McCurry Junior has been missing since January; family members
say authorities found his body on Saturday afternoon in Lake Superior.
A Douglas County (WI) Sheriff's Department news release confirmed
that a body was found but investigators would not reveal the identity
until an autopsy was completed.
"A decomposed body had been found and it was confirmed that it was
the body of Sylvester McCurry Junior," Sylvester McCurry Senior said.
Sylvester Senior lives in Woodbury and says his son moved up to Duluth
to live with his mother four years ago.
"He had on the shoes he had on... what was described as the clothes
he was missing in. (Now) I don't have to worry about my son being out
there in the world being tortured," McCurry Senior said Sunday. He also
said authorities found his son's wallet in his pants' pocket.
McCurry spoke to his son the night he disappeared. He says the teen
went to a hotel and then to an alcohol-free event at a club in Superior,
where he was thrown out the back door because he was allegedly
intoxicated.
Teams spent the days following January 17th scouring the area and
Sylvester Senior was with those search parties. He spent the better part
of 3 months not only looking for his son, but also trying to determine
what happened to Sly Jr. "It was just a parent's worst nightmare. There
was not one lead into his disappearance," he said.
On Sunday, Sylvester McCurry Senior had found some of the closure
he'd been looking for. "I want to take some time and lay my son to rest
and I think everything else will come to fruition," he said.
Sly Senior wants to know why his son was thrown out of the back door
of the club, who supplied the alleged alcohol, and he also wonders if
there was someone out there who may have wanted to hurt his son. "The
circumstances surrounding the whole disappearance lead me to believe
there was foul play," he concluded.

Family members of Sylvester McCurry say they have received some tragic
news about their son.
Authorities say they recovered a body in the area of the Midwest
Energy Coal terminal in Superior on Saturday.
Sly's relatives say its that of the missing Duluth East High
School student.
"I think we're still just in shock," said Tammy Carter,
Sly's mother.
Extensive searches were conducted over the winter months,
but turned up empty.
Now four months after his disappearance, Sly's
family says his body was found in the harbor.
"It's just horrible, this isn't the outcome that we wanted,"
said Jennifer Talbott, Sly's aunt.
Sly's mother says she's trying to remember a son who brought
so much joy to her life.
"Sly was very, very outgoing," Carter said. "Sly had a lot
of friends, he was very popular at school."
But the family says they're left wondering how Sly ended up
in the harbor after a night at Stargate Nightclub in Superior.
"The circumstances surrounding the whole disappearance lead
me to believe that it's foul play," said Sylvester McCurry, Sr., Sly's
dad.
Family members say Sly was found wearing the same clothing
the night he disappeared, and his wallet was also found in his pocket.
"He was a good guy and he was very happy, and he was getting
his life together," said Carter.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Department has confirmed a body
was retrieved, but the identity is being withheld pending an autopsy.
The autopsy results are expected on Tuesday. The family says
they are hoping the coroner's report will provide them with more
details about what happened to Sylvester.

The family has posted on Facebook that Sly's funeral will
be held on June 1st. at the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle.
Four months after he disappeared, Sylvester McCurry's body was
found over the weekend. The family says an autopsy was expected to to
take place on Monday. Still no word on the findings.
Sly went missing in January. Authorities say he was last
seen at Stargate Nightclub in Superior.
Information investigators received from the beginning of the
case indicated McCurry was intoxicated on the night he disappeared.
One theory is that McCurry tried to cross the Saint Louis
River in an attempt to get back to Duluth.
Upon learning of Sly's fate, family members say they're
trying to come to grips with what happened.
"Them finding him here, it's complete shock...there's so
many unanswered questions," said Tammy Carter, Sly's mother.

The Douglas County medical examiner says
the cause of a Duluth, Minn., teenager's death remains
undetermined, and Superior police say there are no signs of foul
play.

end of the dock.


Capt. Chad La Lor said Tuesday that the autopsy found showed no
signs of traumatic injury or assault. The final cause of death
won't be issued until toxicology tests are completed, which could
take three to six weeks.


McCurry was a Duluth East High School student.
His funeral is
set for June 1 at the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle.

Final autopsy reports say that the death of a Duluth, Minn. teenager who
was found washed ashore in Superior, Wis. was accidental.

Eighteen-year-old Sylvester McCurry Jr. went missing after leaving the Stargate nightclub in Superior on Jan. 17.

Security guards at the Midwest Energy Coal Dock in Superior spotted his
body, which was recovered next to shore on the western end of the dock.

Last Friday, the forensic pathologist released a report saying that
McCurry's death "could be attributed to probable cold water immersion
and drowning."

The forensic pathologist's report said McCurry's blood alcohol content
was about 0.08, though the amount of time his body was in water means
that number is likely not accurate.
