Red River Woman Indicted In Children's Deaths
POSTED: 3:47 pm CST January 20, 2011
COUSHATTA -- A Red River Parish woman was charged Thursday with causing the deaths of her two children, who were found dead inside a car on a very hot day last year.
Janel Bradford, 29, of Coushatta was indicted by the Red River Parish grand jury on two counts of second-degree murder Bradford is accused of putting her children -- 1-year-old Ikiriyion and 2-year-old Icarrion Bradford -- in a car parked in front of her home and leaving them there last September. They were discovered unresponsive late in the day and were pronounced dead on arrival at a Coushatta hospital. The temperature that day was in the 80s but was much higher inside the car. Authorities said an autopsy determined the children died of asphyxiation, possibly from being placed in the hot car, but the autopsy never determined how that asphyxiation occurred.
Louisiana law allows murder charges to be filed when a person's death results from a related felony crime such as child cruelty.
Bradford is jailed and awaiting trial.
She is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in Red River District Court.

Poster's Note: JMO but you'd have to wonder if it wasn't deliberate. EVERY mother no matter how stupid knows not to leave their children in the car on a hot day.

COUSHATTA, La. (AP) - A woman charged with second-degree murder after her toddler children died in a hot car has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Janel Bradford was sentenced Tuesday in Red River Parish District Court. She must serve 8 1/2 years before she is eligible for parole, The Times reported.
Bradford pleaded guilty Sept. 12.
District Attorney Julie Jones offered the reduced plea after discussions with the children's father and the lead detective. Jones has said from the beginning she the children died because of negligence.
"It was not a malicious crime," Jones said.
"Based on what I saw, I believe she did not check on those children or their whereabouts. It's an omission, not a positive action on her part."
Bradford was arrested Sept. 29, 2010, when Ikiriyion Bradford, 1, and Icarrion Bradford, 2, were found unresponsive in a vehicle parked in front of her father's home.
Authorities have said Bradford left her four children at her father's house and assumed relatives were taking care of them when she returned.
"But at no time did she ask, `Where are my children?"' Jones said. "Considering the ages, 1 and 2, but she never asked."
Evidence indicates the children were seen playing in the parked car and no one checked on them until late in the day. Temperatures that day were in the upper 80s, but it would have been hotter inside the vehicle.
Two older children were not playing in the car.
Bradford was two months pregnant at the time of her arrest. Relatives are caring for the baby, born March 29, and the older children.
