MICHAEL DAVID ORTIZ - 11 Months (2010) - Aurora IL

Nearly two months after a toddler died, Aurora
police publicly called the death a murder investigation for the first
time on Monday.

According to police, 11-month-old Michael David
Ortiz was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. Dec. 18, 2010, at Central DuPage
Hospital in Winfield. An autopsy performed the next day indicated
Michael’s death was caused by child abuse.

Michael was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center
at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 17 after a 28-year-old man called 911 to report that
the child was not breathing. The man, who police did not identify, was
caring for the child at their home in the 100 block of Cross Street at
the time of the call. Michael’s 24-year-old mother was not home at the
time of the call, police said.

After some initial treatment at Provena, the boy
was flown to Central DuPage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The
death was reclassified as a murder investigation on Dec. 21, after the
initial autopsy results came back.

Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said police
did not believe discussing the child’s death publicly would yield any
more clues in the case. Because the public was never in danger, police
wanted to wait for full autopsy results to release information, Ferrelli
said.

“It’s a sensitive investigation; it’s a complicated
investigation,” Ferrelli said. “There’s several unusual details we
can’t discuss.” No one has been charged in the case, Ferrelli said.

Aurora Police reclassify baby's death homicide

DuPage Co. coroner says 11-month-old's death consistent with child abuse

Aurora Police announced Monday that a death investigation of an 11-month-old boy has been ruled a homicide.

In a statement, Aurora Police say they have been investigating the homicide of 11-month-old Michael David Ortiz since December 21, a few days after the DuPage County Coroner's office said on December 19 that Ortiz's death was consistent with child abuse.

The statement goes on to say that Ortiz was taken to the Provena Mercy
Center Hospital in Aurora at about 1:30 p.m. Ortiz was then airlifted to
Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and by 6:10 p.m. The next day he
was pronounced dead.

The 28-year-old man who brought Ortiz to Provena was the one who was
caring for the boy just prior to the fatal incident, police said in a
statement. The man issued a 911 call from his home in the 100 block of
Cross Street and claimed the child was not breathing.

The dead boy's 24-year-old mother was not home at the time of the ambulance call.

As of yet, no charges have been made in this case.
