Casey Anthony: WKMG drives home value of investigative reporting

WKMG-Channel 6’s Tony Pipitone today promised another behind-the-scenes look at the Casey Anthony case.
“This is all from reviewing information that no other media organization has had access to,” Pipitone said on the noon news in explaining his reporting. “We’ll have more tonight at 11. We’ll reveal the sworn testimony of one key witness, and when you look at that and what Dr. G said, the defense is suggesting that at some point evidence may have been staged.”
A WKMG promo to tonight’s report hints that this key witness could be Roy Kronk, the meter reader who found Caylee Anthony’s remains. Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter.
WKMG’s decision to give Pipitone the time to do these big-picture reports has paid off through the years.
Those reports have reflected Pipitone’s skill and knowledge as well as his time in this market. He’s not talking about his methods, and why should he? It would be foolish to give away the reporting secrets that give him an edge.
And that’s the crucial point: He’s reporting. He’s offering new information that you don’t find elsewhere, and he’s putting that information in context. WKMG’s support is crucial in letting him do what he does best.
At noon today, WKMG repeated Pipitone’s report from 11 p.m. Thursday, when he offered highlights from Dr. Jan Garavaglia’s deposition in September. Pipitone explained how defense attorney Cheney Mason and prosecutor Jeff Ashton questioned television’s Dr. G. The exchanges were mighty revealing and could be a preview of the trial, which begins in May.
Also at noon today, WKMG previewed how the Orange County Courthouse would handle the crush of media for the trial. Reporter Mike DeForest noted that there are 100 seats in the courtroom and that each local media outlet will be assigned one. Other seats will be available to the public, DeForest added, but it isn’t clear how tickets for those seats will be issued.
