Mother of slain 5-year old Newark girl is charged in her death
Wednesday, May 11, 2011, 8:00 AM
Essex County Prosecutor's OfficeBianca Young was charged in the slaying of her 5 year-old daughter.
NEWARK — For three days, Charlize Young kept telling her mother her tummy hurt, relatives said.
As the pain worsened, family members said, Bianca Young tried to
comfort her 5-year-old daughter by rocking the girl back and forth.
Charlize’s hurt lingered until Mother’s Day when, relatives say, the
Newark girl stopped breathing as she was cradled in her mother’s arms.
Though relatives say Young did everything she could to care for her
ailing daughter, prosecutors are painting a different picture, accusing
the 24-year-old Newark woman of delivering a blow that eventually killed
the child.
Young, pregnant with her third child, was charged today with murder,
less than 24 hours after Charlize’s death was ruled a homicide.
Charlize, who relatives said loved to sing and dance inside the
family’s Esther Street apartment in the East Ward, died of blunt force
injuries that caused her to suffer internal bleeding, Acting Essex
County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said.
Authorities would not say if the girl’s injuries were caused by one blow or several over time.
After Charlize stopped breathing, Young and her boyfriend — who is
not Charlize’s father — rushed the girl to University Hospital around 11
p.m. Sunday. She was pronounced dead a short time later, Murray said.
Young was arrested at the hospital on outstanding municipal warrants,
said Thomas Fennelly, head of the prosecutor’s homicide unit, and
formally charged with her daughter’s murder at about 6 p.m. today. She
is being held at the Essex County Jail in lieu of $400,000 bail. Young’s
boyfriend has not been identified or charged.
After the child’s death was reported as a homicide, the prosecutor’s
office identified the victim as a 5-year-old boy named Chalice. The
office corrected the error today.
Bianca’s mother, 45-year-old Bonita Young, refused to believe prosecutors’ allegations.
"She did not do this," Bonita Young said in a telephone interview last evening. "She didn’t do what they’re accusing her of."
Bonita Young said her daughter told her Charlize’s stomach pains began after she ate tacos from a fast-food restaurant.
"She started complaining that she didn’t feel good and I was just
wondering why (Bianca) didn’t take her (to the doctor) right away," said
Bonita Young, who said she spoke to her daughter at the hospital after
Charlize died. "She complained about stomach pains for two days. She’s a
picky eater — she likes veggies and fruits."
"My daughter has a good relationship with her children. She doesn’t beat them," she said.

But Bianca’s grandmother, 62-year-old Gayle Young, said the Newark
woman had become hermit-like over the past few months. Bianca grew
distant from her family, often spending her days at home talking on the
phone rather than paying attention to her young daughters, she said.
"She shut out the family completely. Everything was so secretive with
her," Gayle Young said. "She sat home all the time. All she did was
talk on the phone. From what I heard, she was very neglectful with the
children."
But despite Bianca’s faults, "she was not an abuser," Gayle Young said.
The state Division of Youth and Family Services has no prior history
with Bianca Young, according to an agency spokeswoman, who said another
girl from Young’s apartment was relocated to a foster home. Relatives
identified the girl as Charlize’s 4-year-old sister.
Hours before her granddaughter was charged with the girl’s death, Gayle Young fought back tears as she spoke of Charlize.
"She was very vibrant, energetic, playful, loving," she said. "Just a normal loving child.

NJ MAN CHARGED IN DEATH OF GIRLFRIEND'S DAUGHTER
Essex County prosecutors have filed child endangerment charges against the boyfriend of a Newark woman who's accused of killing her 5-year-old daughter on Mother's Day.
Bail was set at $100,000 for 27-year-old Ahmed Thakur of Newark. He was arrested Wednesday by county detectives.
Prosecutors say the charges against him stem from conduct prior to Charlize Young's death. They are for using corporal punishment on the girl, abandoning her and failing to seek medical treatment.
Thakur's arrest comes one day after the child's mother, 24-year-old Bianca Young, was charged with murder.
Authorities say the girl was rushed to the hospital Sunday night, but died soon after. An autopsy concluded she died from blunt force trauma that caused severe internal bleeding.
It was not known if either defendant has retained a lawyer.
