Mom Accused of Burning Toddler in Scalding Water as Punishment
A Rockaway Park mom was so furious that her 3-year-old had soiled
himself that she held him in scalding water for several minutes, burning
the child so badly his skin began falling off his body, Queens DA
Richard Brown alleges. Regina Cooper, 30, "got upset" when she came home
yesterday and was told that her son, Barkim Owens, had soiled his
pull-ups. According to the DA, she "cursed at her son, stripped him of
his clothing and placed him in the bathtub without testing the
temperature of the water. She allegedly held him submerged in the water
for several minutes while the child screamed, cried and pleaded with his
mother to take him out."
After Cooper finally took her son out of the water, she realized how
badly he was burned, and took him to Nassau County Medical Center, where
he was admitted with second-degree burns on his legs, buttocks and
genitals. "The young child will be permanently scarred—both physically
and emotionally—by the experience and the fact that it is his own mother
charged with seriously harming him," said Brown. Read the DA's press
release here if you want to feel bad about humanity and criticizing your mother.
Cooper is charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare
of a child; if convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison.

Queens mom Regina Cooper faces 15 years for scalding son, 3, in bathtub after he soiled diapers

Barkim Owens, three, was scalded in a bathtub by his mother Regina Cooper in January.
A Queens mom pleaded guilty Thursday to punishing her 3-year-old son by dunking him in a tub of scalding water after he soiled his diapers.
Regina Cooper, 31, faces up to 15 years when she is sentenced as part of the plea deal with Queens prosecutors.
Prosecutors say Cooper stripped off Barkim Owens' clothes after she returned to their Rockaway Park apartment on Jan. 25, 2010 and found he'd soiled his pullups.
Cursing, she forced him into scalding hot water while the boy screamed "It hurts! It hurts!" and pleaded with her to take him out.
By the time she did several minutes later, the youngster's skin was peeling off his body, prosecutors say. The boy had severe scalding over 21% of his body.
Cooper pleaded guilty to assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Her other two children -- ages 5 and 9 -- were removed from the home by city child welfare workers.
"The child will remain scarred both physically and mentally particularly because it is his own mother who harmed him," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

A sicko Queens mom was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday for plunging her 3-year-old son into a tub of scalding water because he soiled his diapers.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter scolded Regina Cooper, 31, of Rockaway Park, for taking her anger out on a youngster "who just wanted to be loved."
"Regina Cooper unfortunately is the mother from hell," Buchter said. "The defendant is sadistic and merciless."
Cooper's lawyer, Pam Jordan, said her client, a onetime child care worker, had been abused throughout her life.

15 years is not enough, especially if NY allows inmates early release. She was a child care worker and thought this was appropriate punishment? Soiling diapers is not a punishable offense, it is a learning process.
I don't give a crap if she was abused as a child. IMO that makes it worse that she would torture her own child.
I also don't give a crap that "most abusers were abused". They should get help and if they can't get healed they don't need to be having babies to torture.
This woman is evil, no other excuse.
All, JMO.
