Day 20 witnesses

Gerardo Bloise

For its first witness, Baez brought back Orange County crime scene investigator Gerardo Bloise, who had already testified twice for the state.

As for the first order of business: Bloise's inspection of the car -- not Casey's, but her then-boyfriend, Tony Lazzaro's.

Bloise said he looked in the trunk of Lazzaro's car on July 23, 2008, to check for blood. He found none.

He then went to the Anthonys' home to collect clothes from Caylee and Casey's bedrooms, while the jury was shown photos of both rooms. He said he did not check the master bedroom.

One photo showed a pair of black, pinstriped pants Casey wore on June 16, 2008, the day the defense said Caylee died. Bloise said he found no stains on those pants, which were recovered from the trunk of Casey's car.

Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick, however, pointed out that Casey's mother, Cindy Anthony, washed all the clothes from the trunk, because of the strong odor.

She asked Bloise if Lazzaro's car smelled like a dead body. The witness said no, but Baez pointed out that Lazzaro had not left trash in his trunk for three weeks.

Heather Seubert

A chief agent at the FBI's lab in Quantico, Virginia, Seubert said she worked in the lab's DNA unit in 2008. She is an expert in serology, the study of bodily fluids, including blood.

Seubert said she tested various parts of Casey's Pontiac Sunfire for blood, including a spare tire cover and lining from the trunk. Both tests came out negative, and no DNA profile could be generated.

She also said she found no blood or biological stains on the clothes collected from Casey's room, and got no DNA profile from the shovel Casey borrowed from her neighbor, Brian Burner.

There were also no bodily fluids detected on clothing found near Caylee's remains, though Seubert admitted that being out in the elements for an extended period of time would potentially destroy some DNA evidence.

Seubert added a small trace of DNA was found on duct tape found near the toddler's remains, but that ended up belonging to an FBI lab technician who handled the tape.

Baez also wanted to ask Seubert about paternity tests conducted on the DNA collected, but the state objected.

After the jury was dismissed for lunch, Seubert testified that in October 2008, Nick Savage, another FBI agent working on the case, asked her to conduct the paternity test to see if Casey's brother, Lee Anthony, was Caylee's father. That test came up negative.

Prosecutor Jeff Ashton was unusually roused in his objection, arguing Baez's questions were irrelevant and not in good faith.

Judge Perry commented on Ashton's tone, telling all the attorneys they did not need to raise their voices. He had Baez revise his question, but Seuter ultimately testified in front of the jury that tests showed Lee Anthony was not Caylee's father.

During cross-examination, Seubert clarified that her analysis only tested for blood, and would not show whether there was any decomposition fluid present.

Robin Maynard

The former crime scene investigator was brought back and briefly questioned on the heart-shaped sticker she collected from the wooded area where Caylee's remains were found.

Maynard said she was in charge of sifting operations at the crime scene. She explained the sticker was collected in what investigators called "Lane 6," about 45 feet from the baseline of the site.

Ronald Murdock

Baez then brought back the Orange County sheriff's forensics supervisor to show the jury where "Lane 6" was in relation to Caylee's skull.

Murdock said the heart-shaped sticker was found about 30 feet from where the skull was when investigators first arrived at the scene.

Jennifer Welch

Called for her fourth testimony this trial, Welch said no bones were found after Lane 6.

Welch then identified trash she collected from the scene, shown to the jury in a series of new photos. The trash included beer bottles and soft drink cans. Welch said she did not believe those items were tested for DNA.

Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick asked if the area where Caylee was found be classified as a "trash dump." Welsh said yes.

Lorie Gottesman

The defense submitted Gottesman, a forensic document examiner for the FBI, as an expert in handwriting and document analysis.

After a lengthy explanation of what she looks for when examining evidence, Gottesman said she found no evidence of a sticker or sticker residue on the duct tape found near Caylee's remains.

Cary Oien

Thursday's final witness, also from the FBI, Oien said he managed the trace evidence unit in 2008 that included previous witnesses Karen Lowe and Stephen Shaw.

A hair and fiber expert, Oien said he found human hair on the shovel Casey borrowed from her neighbor, but it was too small to compare to the others Shaw examined. All he could determine was that the source of the hair was Caucasian.
