TYLERTOWN, Miss. -- A 26-year-old man is charged in connection with the death of a toddler,
the Walthall County Sheriff's Department said. The
child, 16-month-old Bailey Randall, died Sunday at the University of
Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, the sheriff said.Bailey
suffered head injuries while in the care of her mother's boyfriend,
James Dusty Lowry, at her mother's home in Walthall County, the sheriff
said. She was rushed to UMC Friday night, where doctors called the
Walthall County Sheriff's Department and said they suspected abuse,
authorities said.Lowry was arrested and has been charged with
felony child abuse, Sheriff Duane Dillon said."Walthall
is a very close-knit community, and it’s a sad situation for both
families -- for everybody concerned," Dillon said. "Of course, tragedies
usually are like that. Everybody’s just in shock and everybody hates
that it happened. They hate it for both families and especially, of
course, for the baby."Lowry was being held without bond Wednesday
at the Lawrence County Detention Center, because Walthall County
investigators said the facility is better able to hold prisoners in
solitary cells.Investigators said Lowry's charges could be upgraded to murder.

TYLERTOWN,MS (WDAM) - Bond was set at $750,000 in Walthall County Justice Court Thursday morning for 26-year-old James Dustin Lowery who is charged with felony child abuse.
Lowery is charged in connection with the death of 16-month old Bailey Randall on July, 29. The infant was hurt while under Lowery's care. She died two days later at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Lowery, who was the child's mothers boyfriend, initially told police the child had fell and hit her head. UMC contacted the Walthall Sheriff's Department and told them they believed that child abuse was involved. Lowery was arrested in the first week of August and has been held without bond since. He was originally jailed in Lawrence County before being moved to the Marion County Correctional facility in November
The autopsy report on the death has yet to be released, a process that normally takes six to eight weeks. Based on the results of the autopsy, charges on Lowery could be upgraded to reflect the child's death.
Following the hearing Lowery was returned to jail in Columbia.
