"Newborn Jane" LANE-NIKOLIS - 5 Months - Norwalk CT
NORWALK --The mother of a 5-month-old Norwalk child was arrested
Thursday in what a police official called one of the most horrific cases
of child abuse he has seen.
The baby was admitted to Norwalk Hospital Sunday with seven fractured ribs, a fractured skull and a fractured arm, Youth Bureau Lt. Ashley Gonzalez said.
The baby's mother, Jamie Lane, 22, of 5 Avenue E, was charged with first-degree assault and risk of injury to a child. She was held in lieu of $75,000 bond.
Lane attended her arraignment silently while handcuffed to another prisoner at state Superior Court in Norwalk Friday afternoon.
The only time she spoke was when Judge Bruce Hudock asked if she understood a protective order he issued that prohibited her from contacting her child.
Paul Nikolis, who is Lane's boyfriend and father of the girl, watched
the arraignment but said he did not want to comment about the case.
Nikolis, 28, said he and Lane have been a couple for about a year.
"This is a pretty sad case," Gonzalez said. "It's one of the worst I
have seen in my 23 years of service . . . . It is incomprehensible that a
child of that age could be subject to this type of treatment."
When the baby was brought to the hospital, the girl was "covered with
bruises," and her injuries did not appear to be accidental,
Gonzalez said.
The baby has been released from the hospital and placed in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.
Gonzalez seemed optimistic about the baby's release from the
hospital, but was not sure if she sustained permanent physical damage
from the abuse. Gonzalez said the baby was living with Lane, her
boyfriend and her parents on Avenue E.
Lane was arrested at her home, and another arrest may be made in the case, Gonzalez said.
According to Lane's three-page arrest affidavit, Lane admitted to police that she abused the child.
At first she told police she saw her mother punch the baby in the
chest four days before her mother brought the child to the
Emergency Room.
But Detective Rafael Fonseca, the lead investigator on the case, said it became apparent Lane was lying.
The affidavit said Lane's parents brought the baby to the hospital
after consulting a relative who is a social worker in Queens, N.Y.
She later admitted that fights with her parents and giving birth
caused her to react physically against her daughter, the affidavit said.
"I was overwhelmed," she said in a statement to police, according to
the affidavit. "About a week after her birth, the stress of caring for
her began to get the best of me. (The baby) was crying all the time. I
picked up (the baby) and squeezed her to try to get her to stop crying. I
squeezed her a couple of times. I was not trying to hurt her. A couple
of days later I noticed some bruising around the center of her chest. My
mom asked about the bruising. I told her what happened. She said I
needed some help."
During a fight with her mother four days before the baby was admitted
to the hospital, Lane said she gave the baby a squeeze two times and
the baby began crying louder, her statement said.
While Lane was putting the baby into the crib, the child slipped from
her hands and hit her head on the railing, the statement said.
In addition to injuries to the baby's ribs, arm and head, a hospital
doctor told police one of the girl's lungs was collapsing when admitted
to the hospital, the affidavit said.

NORWALK -- The father of a seriously injured baby girl, who was taken to Norwalk Hospital
in late September and found to have fractured ribs, skull fractures and
a fractured arm, has been charged with assault, police said.
Paul Nikolis, 27, formerly of Stamford and with no known current
address, was charged Thursday afternoon with first-degree assault and
risk of injury to a child and was held in lieu of $100,000 bond. He will
be arraigned on the charges at state Superior Court in Norwalk on Friday.
The child's mother, Jamie Lane, 22, was arrested Sept. 29, four days after the baby's grandparents brought her to Norwalk Hospital.
Lane received identical charges and is currently being held at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic on $75,000 bond.
In a press release, Norwalk Youth Bureau commander Lt. Ashley Gonzalez said police were able to obtain the second warrant for Nikolis' arrest and served it yesterday.
When Lane was arrested, Gonzalez said the case was one of the most horrific chases of child abuse he has ever seen.
"It is a very sad case," he said Friday morning.
When the five-month-old baby girl was brought to the hospital she was covered in bruises, Gonzalez said.
Nikolis attended Lane's arraignment at the Norwalk courthouse the day
after her arrest but declined to make a public statement about the
mother of his child. The two were living in Lane's parents home on
Avenue E in Norwalk when the alleged abuse took place, police said.
Doctors found the baby girl had eight fractured ribs, two skull fractures and a fractured arm, Lane's arrest warrant said.
The child has since been released from the hospital and is in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.
Lane admitted to police that she abused the child.
"I was overwhelmed," she said in a statement to police, according to the affidavit.
