Parents enter pleas in malnourished child case
By The Associated Press | Posted: Tuesday, October 4, 2011 1:00 pm
OMAHA -- The parents of a 10-month old girl who weighed less than 10 pounds have entered pleas in the case and will be sentenced in December.
Celeste Hunt, 23, pleaded guilty recently to felony child abuse and Jamaal Hunt, 24, pleaded no contest. A second charge of child abuse against both parents was dismissed.
Police say the couple's baby was very dehydrated and malnourished when she was hospitalized last June.
Doctors told police that the child weighed what an average one-month-old baby would weigh and that she likely has suffered significant brain damage as a result.
Jamaal Hunt admitted to police he and his wife had fed their daughter a mixture of water, baby food and oatmeal because they couldn't afford to buy milk.

10 Years In Prison For Parents Of 10-Pound 10-Month-Old
Baby Now 16 Months Old, Can't Walk Or Talk
By Kathy Niver
CREATED DEC. 2, 2011
Omaha, NE - The mother and father of a 10-month-old who weighed less than 10 pounds are headed to prison--for up to 10 years each.
Police say Jamall and Celeste Hunt's 10-month-old baby Jazlyn was "very dehydrated and malnourished" when she was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the Nebraska Medical Center last June.
According to prosecutors at the couple's sentencing, Jazlyn--who's 16 months old now--can't walk or talk and still has trouble eating. She's in a foster home.
At the time of her hospitalization, the baby was in serious condition; doctors said her skin was loose, her eyes were sunken, and they could count her ribs.
23-year-old Celeste Hunt recently pleaded guilty to felony child abuse; 24-year-old Jamall pleaded no contest and has since given up his parental rights.
Doctors told officers the baby's "illness and health problems have most likely come from lack of proper food" and that she weighed what an average one-month-old would weigh. One doctor said the baby could have died and has has little brain growth since birth. Jazlyn also "most likely sustained significant neurologic injury" which may not be apparent until she's four or five, At that time, doctors told police, she could have developmental delays, learning disabilities or mental retardation.
Her father admitted to police that they had been feeding her a mixture of water, baby food and oatmeal because they couldn't afford to buy milk.
Jamall Hunt had been in trouble with police before for leaving Jazlyn and her two-year-old sister home alone.
