"Infant Jane Doe" - 13 Months/ Accused: Zack Weis - New Albany IN
NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- A 13-month-old
girl is fighting for her life at the Kosair Children’s Hospital after
what New Albany police said was a serious case of child abuse. The girl’s mother's boyfriend has been accused of battering the baby.Police
said the girl was taken to the hospital with severe bruising and
multiple fractures. At last check, she was in critical condition.Police
arrested 19-year-old Zack Weis. Investigators said he beat the
13-month-old inside her home on East Fifth Street in New Albany, causing
the extensive injuries.Weis is charged with aggravated battery,
but New Albany's police chief said it's possible more charges could be
filed as the investigation continues.Police said the child was
first brought to Floyd Memorial Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, but the
situation was so dire authorities transported her to Kosair immediately.Since then, her status has been up and down, from critical to serious and back to critical.“We
find it inconceivable that an adult can perpetrate a heinous amount of
injury to such a young innocent infant,” New Albany Police Chief Todd
Bailey said.Weis is being held in the Floyd County jail. Bailey said he does not know of any past abuse cases involving Weis.As
for the child's mother, it is not clear whether she was home at the
time of the alleged beating. Police said the child was brought to the
hospital by her mother.
