"Newborn John" BASILIO - 7 Weeks - Phoenix AZ
PHOENIX -- A Valley couple is facing a charge of child abuse after admitting to a doctor that he shook his 7-week-old baby.
Taylor and Candice Basilio's little son was hospitalized earlier this
month. Tests showed the infant was underweight and had suffered some
serious injuries, including several rib fractures, a broken clavicle,
fractures to both legs and two skull fractures.
According to court paperwork, Basilio, 30, admitted to doctors that has shaken the baby on three separate occasions last month.
Doctors first discovered the baby's injuries when Basilio and his
wife took him to his pediatrician to get a flu shot because he had a
stuffy nose. That was on Dec. 5, and it was only the second time the
doctor had seen the baby since he was born.
Realizing that the baby was seriously underweight, the pediatrician
had him taken to Banner Thunderbird Hospital for observation. X-rays
taken at the hospital revealed two rib fracture and a clavicle fracture,
all of which were healing. That's when hospital staff contacted the
police.
Further X-rays at Banner and then at St. Joseph's Hospital revealed even more healing breaks.
When police interviewed the baby's mother, she said she did now know how the baby's bones were broken.
During his initial interview with police, Basilio asked about getting
counseling for his anger issues, calling himself an "angry man" who
gets "frustrated often." Court paperwork indicates that he has prior
arrests for two counts of domestic-violence assault. Those documents
also show that Basilio told police, "I have done stupid things lately,"
although he did not elaborate.
Basilio was arrested Saturday.
The judge set Taylor Basilio's bond at $100,000. He is not allowed to
have any contact with the baby, nor is he to talk to child's mother
about the case.
A status conference has been scheduled for Dec. 19, with a preliminary hearing to follow on Dec. 21.
On Monday, police once again talked to Candice Basilio. According to
Officers James Holmes, the 24-year-old admitted that both she and her
husband hurt their baby. She was arrested and booked on one count of
child abuse.
Holmes said the baby is in stable condition, but his prognosis is not
clear. Doctors have scheduled more tests to determine the extent of his
injuries.

Just an FYI for those of you who are posting without knowing all the facts: Number 1 - she did not do anything except try to protect the baby. Number 2 - she was beat up as well (this is NOT being reported in the media). Number 3 - her husband kept her from all her family and doctors. Number 4 - He IS the one who hurt the baby, not her. They are both deaf and also have a 3 year old daughter, who has shown no signs of abuse. She is the one who requested that the police be called when her husband was out of the room. She needed to be protected too. Once this goes to court, the truth will come out. CPS was involved in the original interview with the mother as well as a Level 5 sign language interpreter. Her husband is the one who did all the abuse on the baby. I agree that he needs to be castrated and beat up but please don't judge the mother. She did what she could to protect them but her best wasn't enough. The police were called to her home on Thanksgiving Day because he beat her so bad she couldn't stand up or walk, but the cops said that they could not do anything unless she pressed charges at the courthouse. They would not even take him to jail that night. And, he even hit his sister, who by the way, is 4 months pregnant at his parents house and they did NOTHING! So, there is more to the story than is being reported.

Thank you IKTF for bringing more perspective to this sad story and welcome to J4C!
As can be there's more to the story than sometimes gets reported and that's why we welcome your participation to help us understand.
Based on your knowledge there has been ongoing spousal abuse and with her hearing deficit she may have felt trapped by this ogre.
I still don't understand why she didn't reach out for help sooner.
Why didn't her family get involved? They must have suspected something was amiss?

Welcome IKTF to the forum. We appreciate your prospective and information. So are you saying this statement is untrue as the article states she admitted she hurt the baby too. As Tom said, why didn't she try to get help sooner and where were family and friends if she was that vunerable. Hopefully the baby will heal, but we need to work harder to help loved ones that are being abused. Statement snipped from the article:
"On Monday, police once again talked to Candice Basilio. According to Officers James Holmes, the 24-year-old admitted that both she and her husband hurt their baby. She was arrested and booked on one count of child abuse."

So it sounds like you're saying the mother refused to press charges, yet you are blaming the 'cops' for not taking action, is that right?I know the facts wrote:Just an FYI for those of you who are posting without knowing all the facts: Number 1 - she did not do anything except try to protect the baby. A Phoenix man accused of harming his infant son last month has pleaded not guilty.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 29-year-old Taylor Jose Basilio entered his plea Monday. His initial pretrial conference is scheduled for Feb. 21.
Basilio was arrested on suspicion of child abuse after doctors discovered that his 7-week-old son had several broken bones and a fractured skull.
Authorities say Basilio and his wife brought their child to a pediatrician Dec. 5 to receive a flu shot because he had a stuffy nose.
During the visit, the doctor noticed that the boy was underweight and had him further evaluated at hospital. That's when the broken bones and skull fracture were discovered.
