TUCSON - The mother of a 2-year-old and the mother's boyfriend have
been indicted on two counts of Child Abuse each for injuries to the
child, and for failing to seek medical attention. The mother's
boyfriend was also indicted on a charge of Attempted Second-Degree
Murder.
On the evening of January 14, Tucson Fire Department transported a
2-year-old girl from the 5400 block of East 18th Street to a nearby
hospital because the child was experiencing difficulty breathing,
according to a Tucson Police Department news release.
Medical staff learned that the child had extensive injuries and
notified police. Officers and detectives from the Dependent Child Unit
responded, and learned that the girl had numerous fractures and internal
injuries. Medical staff told police that they were non-accidental, and
likely caused by blunt force trauma, the release states.
During the investigation, detectives determined that the mother,
25-year-old Ashlee Nichole Liberty, failed to protect her child, and she
was arrested and charged with one count of Child Abuse. Liberty's
boyfriend, 27-year-old Oscar Omar Aguirre, who is not the child's
biological father, was arrested for two counts of Child Abuse, the
release states.
Today, Liberty and Aguirre were indicted in Pima County Superior
Court on two Child Abuse charges each: one count for "failing to seek
prompt medical attention to the victim's injuries," and another count
for "injuries to the abdomen, ribs and internal organs."
Aguirre received an additional charge for Attempted Second-Degree Murder.
