"Newborn John Doe" - 6 Months/ Accused: Unnamed 18 yo Boyfriend - Tumwater/ Olympia WA
An 18-year-old man is facing first-degree child abuse charges after a 6-month-old boy was found unconscious Sunday afternoon in Tumwater .
During a court hearing Monday, the man was ordered held at the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of first-degree child abuse. Bail was set at $200,000.
Tumwater police officers responded to a call in the 2800 block of Fortner Drive Southwest at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. There they found the 6-month-old boy unconscious and not breathing, said detective Charles Lisk.
The child had sustained “pretty severe” injuries to the head, Liska said.
Officers performed CPR. The boy was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital and later transferred to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma where he remained in pediatric intensive care with life-threatening injuries, Liska said.
The boy was in the care of his mother’s 18-year-old boyfriend. Liska said that details of how the child was injured were unclear.
The 18-year-old admitted to smoking marijuana “throughout the day” while caring for the child, court papers state. The 18-year-old stated he may have dropped the 6-month old into his crib and that may have caused the injuries, according to court papers.
Liska told the 18-year-old “that a drop into soft bedding would not cause the types of injuries that had been described.”
When Liska asked the 18-year-old if the child “had struck his head on anything when dropped or if he had been shaken at any point during the day,” he responded “no and then stated he did not know,” according to court papers.
“Throughout the interview, it was apparent that (the 18-year-old) was not being entirely forthcoming and stated several times that he was nervous about going to jail,” court papers state.
“It’s just obvious it’s nonaccidental trauma,” Liska said. “The stories don’t make sense.”
