"Newborn Jane Doe" - 3 Months/ Accused: Dontae Neal - Racine WI
RACINE — A 25-year-old Racine man was taken into custody Friday for allegedly abusing a child, after police were notified of a 3-month-old girl in Racine with serious injuries.
Dontae Neal, 25, of Racine, was arrested for physical abuse to a child, according to police.
The 3-month-old girl had head trauma consistent with being shaken and healing rib fractures, according to a notification from the state Department of Children and Families.
The girl was originally transported Sunday evening by Racine paramedics to the emergency room at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St., according to a press release from the Racine Police Department issued Friday.
The infant was then transferred to Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa. Friday afternoon, the infant remained at Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said.
A nurse at Children’s Hospital contacted Friday night was not able to provide any updated information about the infant due to patient privacy laws.
The staff of Children’s Hospital also learned a 1-year-old boy lived in the same home as the girl, police said. Racine County Human Services and the Racine Police Department responded to a home in the 1800 block of Sixth Street to check on the welfare of the boy.
Sgt. Martin Pavilonis of the Racine Police Department said Neal is the young boy’s father, but not the girl’s father.
Officers located the 1-year-old boy and Neal in the home.
The boy was placed in the custody of Racine County Human Services and Neal was transported to the Racine Police Department. Neal was subsequently taken to the Racine County Jail on an unrelated offense.
Neal was in custody in the Milwaukee House of Corrections on Friday, police said. The Racine County District Attorney’s Office is expected to issue formal charges in the near future.
