Students returned to class Monday following Spring Break, but there's
still no sign of 18-year-old Colin Gillis. He was last seen just over a
week ago after leaving a friend's party in Tupper Lake, in the Adirondacks.

"Like everyone's trying to stay happy as possible,
but still at the end of the day we know he's not here," Colin's friend
Shawn Powell said.

"I was completely shocked," Classmate
Stephanie Schmidt said. "Like I said, he was in a couple of my classes. I
knew him through Biology, through labs and I've hung out with him. It's
a shock to see someone you know so close to you just vanish. I was
taken aback."

Powell lives right down the hall from Gillis. He often gave Colin haircuts.

Sunday night he and other residents of Thompson Hall made cards to send to the Gillis family.

"I
basically I didn't say anything too sad," Powell said. "I basically
stayed upbeat. I told them in the card that. I love him and everything
and I know he's going to be back safe. I told him free haircuts for
life. I've got him."

Colin went missing 8 days ago while home in the Adirondacks for Spring Break.

More than a thousand volunteers helped State Police and Forest Rangers
search 2,000 acres of land. On Monday, the DEC said they're scaling back
the search and focusing on waterways.

Brockport has counselors on hand to help students deal with the uncertainty of the situation

Powell said Colin's friends believe he'll turn up OK.

"We're all thinking extremely positive about it," Powell said. "No one is
giving up. So we're all thinking like he's coming back."

Some personal items of Gillis' were found March 12 during the search, but nothing else since.

State police said rangers searched the ground shoulder to shoulder -three times in some places.

They're asking anyone with information to give them a call at their Ray Brook location at (518) 897-2000.

Collin
was attending a house party Saturday on Cambridge Avenue in Mariemont
when he reportedly left to walk home about 4 a.m., a distance that would
have been about five miles. He hasn’t been seen since.
The
search, which has been focused in and around the Little Miami River,
didn’t turn up anything Tuesday, said Terrace Park police Lt. Tim Chin.
Collin is roughly 6 foot tall, 125 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing a dark green t-shirt and blue jeans.
He attends Mariemont High School, confirmed school Superintendent Paul Imhoff.
“We join with Collin’s family in praying for his safe return,” Imhoff said Monday morning.
According
to a “Find Collin Barton” Facebook page, Collin’s friends were “spotted
on the Little Miami Monday afternoon conducting their own search in a
kayak.”
Several individuals have also joined the search for the young man, according to the Facebook page.
Mariemont
Police Chief Richard Hines said his department had no comment at this
time about whether charges will be filed against the owners of the home
where the party was held.
Anyone
with information that could help police track Collin down is asked to
call the Terrace Park Police Department, 513-831-2137.

With hope in their hearts and fear in the back of their minds,
people had searched for 16-year-old Collin Barton since he vanished
Sunday.
But a body, believed to be Collin’s, was found Tuesday
down a wooded embankment; he apparently had been struck by a vehicle,
police said. That unexpected scenario left communities where he lived
and went to school grieving his death, wondering how it happened and
questioning why he wasn’t found sooner.
“The whole community is
just trying to wrap our arms around the Barton family and each other,”
said Jamie Flerlage, who lives in Collin’s Terrace Park neighborhood.
“It just hits home. As a neighbor, it feels like one of our own.”
Hours
after the sad news circulated, about 100 students gathered at Mariemont
High School, where Collin was a junior, for an impromptu vigil Tuesday
evening. They sat grieving in a circle on the football field’s large
blue “M” for about an hour. As the group dispersed, friends shared their
appreciation for Collin.
“He made me feel happier,” said Ryan
Fine, vice president of the junior class. He said Collin, unlike some
peers, seemed at ease expressing himself. He loved to dance and easily
shared admiration for his friends. He remembered what Collin said to him
the last time the two saw each other on Friday at school: “He told me
he really liked my singing.”
Ryan’s mother, Molly Fine, said she
spent an hour on Monday looking for Collin in a wooded area of Indian
Hill, and another block of time looking for him Tuesday in Newtown. She,
like many people, theorized that Collin must have gotten lost in the
darkness as he walked from a friend’s house toward his home.
According
to a “Find Collin Barton” Facebook page, Collin’s friends were “spotted
on the Little Miami Monday afternoon conducting their own search in a
kayak.”
Collin’s father, Sean Barton, conducted his own desperate
search. He repeatedly sent out pleas for help via the Internet. In a
posting to Terrace Park residents on a Listserve, he said Collin “was
upset about a breakup” when Collin left a friend’s house in Mariemont on
Sunday.
“Collin said he was walking home to Terrace Park to admit
what he has done (lied about where he was),” Barton’s posting says. “He
was very upset with himself. This is completely out of character. He
was not mad at us. We were not mad at him.”
Then there was this
Facebook posting around 1 p.m. Tuesday: “Collin is still missing. I am
running out of ideas....we need to consider every scenario. Please
continue to spread the word... Consider you may see him anywhere. Check
your out buildings, empty or vacant houses, even if they are locked,
garages campers, etc. Check anywhere you think someone could take
shelter, hide, fall in, get stuck in or locked in. I cannot stress how
out of character this is, how bizarre, how concerning. We clearly cannot
find him without your help. Please, please, please keep looking.”
Just
two hours later, a Terrace Park medic spotted the body believed to be
Collin, said Hamilton County Sheriff’s Capt. Walt Hendrick.
No
identification was found at the scene, but authorities were 99 percent
certain that the body was Collin’s, Hendrick said. When last seen,
Collin was wearing a green T-shirt and blue jeans – the same clothing
found on the body of a young white male.
Hendrick said Collin was
apparently struck by a vehicle as he walked along Wooster Pike in
Columbia Township, just west of Terrace Park. The body was found over a
guard rail about 15 feet down an embankment and was not visible from the
roadway, Hendrick said.
Hendrick didn’t know why the area wasn’t
searched for Collin until Tuesday. “In hindsight, that probably should
have taken place earlier,” he said.
Via Facebook, news media websites and word-of-mouth, the news spread.
School
officials emailed parents: “Collin Barton has been missing since early
Sunday morning, and this afternoon we received the sad news of his
death,” Superintendent Paul Imhoff wrote. “The Barton family requests
that all missing posters be taken down. Please keep the Barton family in
your thoughts and prayers.”
Mariemont’s lacrosse team was
practicing when a school official notified athletes about Collin. “He
always lived life to the fullest,” said lacrosse team member Joe
Rolander, noting Collin enjoyed skateboarding.
By 5 p.m., friends
and family had gathered at Collin’s home. They were too distraught to
talk to reporters. When asked how Collin’s family was doing, a close
family friend, Terrace Park resident Anthony Sullivan said, “They’re a
wreck.”
Sullivan said it was not unusual for Collin to walk along
the bike path for several miles, but he didn’t know why Collin would
instead have walked along Wooster Pike.
Collin had lots of friends and was a talented artist who created his own computer games and graphics, Sullivan said.
His
parents, Deborah and Sean Barton, also have a younger son and daughter,
Sullivan said, adding, “His family is one of the best families in this
town.”
Police said they were interviewing the 23-year-old Milford
motorist about Sunday’s crash that apparently involved Collin. As of
late Tuesday, they had not released an update on the investigation or
said whether the motorist would face any charges.
On Saturday,
Collin had attended a house party on Cambridge Avenue in Mariemont. He
reportedly left to make the five-mile walk home about 4 a.m. Sunday.
Mariemont
Police Chief Richard Hines said his department had no comment whether
charges will be filed against the owners of the home where the party was
held on St. Patrick’s Day.
On Monday, hundreds of people attended
a prayer vigil for Collin and his family at Terrace Park’s Village
Green. Imhoff was one of the speakers.
There also was a vigil Tuesday night at SonRise Church in Columbia Township.
“This
is a close-knit community,” Imhoff said. “It’s very family-oriented.
When one member of the family is hurting, everybody comes together to
support that member of the family.”

CINCINNATI -- Hamilton County's prosecutor says a grand jury has indicted a man accused of providing drugs to a teenager who later died.Prosecutor
Joe Deters said 20-year-old Andrew Weber, of Indian Hill, was indicted
on four counts of trafficking in drugs. Deters said Weber sold
hallucinogenic mushrooms to Collin Barton."The toxicology reports indicate that those mushrooms were in his system," Deters said.Barton, 16, was found two days after he went missing while walking home from at a March party in Columbia Township."We had cooperation from other kids at the party," Deters said.Barton's
body was found off the side of Wooster Pike after a Milford man told
authorities he thought he hit a deer on his way home early on the
morning Barton was going home.

Andrew Weber
Deters said he was not currently seeking charges against the driver because
there was not sufficient evidence that the driver was at fault. Deters
did say that could change in the future."At some point (the
driver) probably dozed off, but again, the problem is we really can't
pinpoint where Collin was walking that night, except he wasn't on the
sidewalk."Deters said witness statements and other evidence
showed Weber, who is being sought by authorities, sold drugs to Barton
and undercover agents after the teen's death.
