"Newborn John Doe" - 13 Weeks/ Accused: Victor Patterson Sr - Lincoln NE
Police say it's likely "out-of-control" anger led to the severe abuse of a 13-week-old boy.
Police say 25-year-old Victor Patterson Sr. was arrested Saturday.
LPD says the child's mother had taken the boy to the emergency room because he kept vomiting.
But it turned the sickness was a result of severe internal injuries.
Officer Katie Flood says, "A 13-week-old baby was
taken to the hospital with internal bleeding around the skull and a
skull fracture. The child was later transported to an Omaha hospital
were a full body scan revealed rib fractures, as well as a lacerated liver ."
Police later found the injuries were caused when Patterson became angry with the boy.
Reports show he threw the boy into a coffee table, the later slammed the child's head into an open medicine cabinet.
Police say at one point the child had been squeezed so hard his ribs were fractured.
The child remains in an Omaha hospital.
Patterson faces felony child abuse charges.
Councilors at the Child Advocacy Center say anger is the most common trigger for abuse.
They say parents who don't know how to cope with a child's behavioral problems sometimes go too far.
Program Coordinator Carrie Simpson says, "It's ok to
put the infant into the crib and walk away and give yourself a break.
Take a time out. Parents probably need it more than kids do just to cool
off and gather your thoughts and emotions."
There are resources to help struggling parents, like the Nebraska Family Helpline.
Parents can talk to crisis councilors 24/7.
DHHS Director of the Division of Behavioral Health
Scot Adams says, "There is no charge for the service. It is free. It is
anonymous. You can go as far as you want to with it. You are in complete
control of this call."
