Re: DEVON DAVIS - 2 yo - Cleveland TX
The search continues today for a missing child in
Liberty County. Search teams are looking for 2-year-old Devin Davis
after he went missing yesterday afternoon. About 100 firefighters from the surrounding area are searching the
woods and the water around his home in Sam Houston Lakes Estates in
Cleveland. Resources from HPD have also been poured into the search
since this boy went missing.
Davis has blue eyes and red hair.
He is about 30 inches tall and weighs about 40 pounds. He was last seen
wearing a gray and burgundy jersey, blue jeans and Spider-Man tennis
shoes. Police say they have no reason to believe Davis was abducted,
but they aren't ruling out the possibility so they issued the Amber
Alert.
The family just moved into the area last week from
Virginia. The mother noticed the child was missing yesterday afternoon
after she woke up from a nap.
"The mother stated that she laid
the kids down for a nap and he disappeared from inside the residence,"
said Capt. Rex Evans with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
Devin's family and friends remain on the property.
"We've kept them kind of contained on the far side of the property.
They are very distraught. They are having a very difficult time," said
Capt. Evans. "We are continuing a very scaled back version of our ground
search. Once daybreak affords us a little bit of light, then we will
certainly intensify our search efforts like they were yesterday
evening."
The Liberty County Sheriff's Office brought in search
teams, boats and off-road vehicles. The area in which they are
searching for the boy is heavily wooded and has lots of bodies of water
which is covered with moss and vegetation.
The HPD chopper was
in the air with an infra-red camera early this morning. A DPS
helicopter is expected to join the search after daybreak. More
volunteers are expected to join the search as well.

Re: DEVON DAVIS - 2 yo - Cleveland TX
“I just don’t understand how someone can disappear off the face of the earth!”
These were the anguished words spoken by April Davis, the
mother of missing 2-year-old Devon Davis, as she watched searchers
begin the heartbreaking job of searching the creek near her home.
“He’s never done anything like this before,” she said before
collapsing in sobs on Tuesday afternoon, March 27, just a few hours
after everything in her world changed forever.
April and her
husband, Mike, moved only recently to the Sam Houston Lakes subdivision
from Virginia. Mike, a former Army Airborne soldier, was having a hard
time finding work after his discharge. He said an Army buddy offered his
family a new start in Texas, and they were happy and grateful for the
offer. He came down first to make work arrangements, then returned to
fetch his family. They arrived last Thursday, hopeful for their new
start.
Davis said she had laid down with Devon and his
15-month-old sister Tuesday afternoon for a nap, but when she woke up
shortly after 3 p.m., Devon was gone. After desperately searching for
the toddler, she called 911 at about 4 p.m. Deputies from the Liberty
County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.
The house on CR
2901 is a bi-level structure on stilts to keep from flooding, since the
property is surrounded on three sides by a horseshoe-shaped creek. A
straight, single flight of stairs leads up to the living space on the
second level. The yard is roughly an acre, with lots of spaces that
could attract an inquisitive 2-year-old. It leads in three directions to
thick underbrush and woods along the creek bank. A bridge spans the
creek across the driveway from the house.
LCSO Captain Rex Evans
said they began the search by first scouring the house inside and out,
including the space underneath, with a thermal imaging camera.
Determined to be thorough, the process was completed three times while
other investigators began a methodical search of the perimeter of the
property. Neighbors were contacted and vehicles were searched in case
Devon might have been able to get inside a car and become trapped.
It
quickly became obvious the search was going to have to be expanded.
Evans called for assistance from the Tarkington Volunteer Fire
Department, followed closely by calling every fire department in the
county. The Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office was
contacted to bring their bloodhound and DPS was also asked to send a
helicopter with thermal imaging capabilities to search from the air. An
Amber Alert was issued in case Devon had been abducted.
Approximately 15 minutes had elapsed since deputies arrived on the scene.
It was originally thought Devon had been wearing shoes, but it turned out the young boy was barefooted.
“That wouldn’t have slowed him down,” said Mike. “He was always running around barefooted. He has tough feet.”
Following
the scent from a pair of the boys’ socks worn earlier in the day, the
bloodhound seemed to track a couple of spots near the creek bank, one on
the left hand side of the house and one across the bridge from the
house.
TVFD’s boat was brought out to begin dragging the creek,
but the creek was too narrow and shallow in places for the boat to be
launched. Needham Fire Department was called to bring their amphibious
ATV unit to search the water. A smaller boat from Cypress Lakes VFD was
also launched to aid in the search.
As the sun set with no sign of Devon, April and Mike settled into numb resolve, punctuated by tears, disbelief and fear.
“I feel like I should be doing something,” said April with haunted eyes. “How can I just be sitting here?”
Mike held his wife and told her there was nothing they could do. Just wait and hope.
The
search continued through the night. Needham Fire Department member Cody
Tweedy, outfitted in a wetsuit, stayed in the water for over seven
hours, painstakingly sweeping the creek from side to side in what was
termed a “zipper search.” Other firefighters stayed as long as they
could, eventually sending members home to get rest in case the search
would have to be resumed at dawn.
A DPS helicopter came back out
at 5 a.m. on Wednesday to perform another sweep of the area with the
thermal imaging camera, but to no avail.
Members of Tarkington,
Cypress Lakes and HWY 321 VFDs stayed overnight. Evans recalled the
other fire departments in the county to resume the ground search shortly
before 8 a.m. The county game warden is also on the scene as well as
several law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel.
The command post has requested civilians stay clear of the area so as not to impede the organized search.
Donations
of water, Gatorade, snacks or other food for searchers is appreciated.
The public is asked to drop off donations at the Precinct 2 JP’s office
located across the street from the Tarkington fire station on SH 321.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Poster's note: "Mean river...gators....snakes"
CLEVELAND, Texas – Volunteers and authorities continued their frantic search for a missing 2-year-old boy in Liberty County Wednesday afternoon, nearly 24 hours after he vanished.
Devon Davis disappeared on Tuesday after his mom put him down for a nap.
She told investigators that she put the toddler and his sister down, bolted the front door and went to sleep herself.
When she woke up, the boy was gone.
Devon and his family had only been living at the home in Liberty County for six days. They recently moved from Virginia, and were staying with a family friend.
When Devon disappeared, his father and the family who owns the home were not there.
Investigators said after she realized the boy was gone, the mother called 911.
"When she couldn’t find anybody, she called 911, and it was a very – a very difficult call to listen to," Capt. Rex Evans of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office said. "Extremely distraught, it’s been a very difficult time for them."
An Amber Alert was issued for the boy Tuesday evening, and crews immediately launched an extensive search.
Aided by helicopters, search dogs and sonar equipment from Texas EquuSearch, volunteers and authorities combed the rough, wooded terrain surrounding the home in the Sam Houston Lakes Estate subdivision.
The search was concentrated in the area near FM 2252 and FM 2518 – an area neighbors said is full of wild animals and water.
"It’s a mean river. She’ll take a life in a heartbeat, she’s taken a lot of them," neighbor Deborah Scott said. "What I’m worried about is the gators. There’s gators everywhere, and they’re crawling real bad, and we’ve got snakes out here too. I can’t believe this baby is missing."
Devon has red hair and blue eyes. He stands about 30 inches tall and weighs 40 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red-and-gray T-shirt, jeans and Spider Man tennis shoes.
Detectives on Wednesday collected two bags of evidence from behind Devon’s home, but they said so far, none of their leads has panned out.
Meanwhile, the family and neighbors could only wait and hope that Devon would be found safe.
"We’ve had grown people missing in these woods, and it took four days to find them. And this is a 2-year-old, surrounded by water," Scott said.
Anyone with information on Devon’s whereabouts should call the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at 936-336-4500.

Re: DEVON DAVIS - 2 yo - Cleveland TX
CLEVELAND - As the sun set Wednesday, investigators hunkered down for
another long night of searching the alligator- and snake-infested
bayous and woods for a toddler who vanished from his Liberty County home
after being put down for a nap.
The photo of 2-year-old Devin
Davis - with his red curls, blue eyes and mischievous grin - provided
strong motivation for the more than 100 law enforcement officers and
firefighters combing the river bottomland surrounding the two-story
wooden house east of Cleveland where Devin lived.
"Every minute,
every hour that passes without finding this boy - is agonizing for all
of us out here," said Liberty County sheriff's spokesman Rex Evans, as the second day of searching drew to an end.
Many were showing signs of exhaustion after trudging for hours through murky waist-deep water in creeks and bayous.
Those
using four wheelers and horses to navigate the dense brambles and
underbrush of the forest that links the waterways were also weary. And
the heat-sensing infrared devices on the Texas Department of Public Safety's helicopter had difficulty penetrating the thick foliage and had gotten zero hits, authorities said.
"It's dangerous as hell for any 2-year-old to be wandering around here without an adult," said Keith Brooks,
who has lived in the area for 45 years. "There's poisonous snakes, all
kinds of gators and wild hogs that will tear you up. Many of those
gators and hogs would look at a baby as a meal."
The boy's mother, April Davis, told authorities that she last saw her son when she put him and his 1-year-old sister down for a nap about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
She and her husband, Mike, and their children had moved there from Virginia just a week earlier after an old U.S. Army buddy helped him get a welding machinist job.
The friend, Bobby Herren,
also invited them to live temporarily with him and his girlfriend in
their home in Sam Houston Lake Estates, said Herren's mother, Gwen Sale.
Davis,
who served in Bosnia and Iraq before his discharge from the Army, had
become good friends with Herren while both were stationed at Fort Polk,
Sale said.
On the day Devin disappeared, April Davis was home
alone with the children. Her husband and Herren were working a job in St
Charles, La., and Herren's girlfriend was at work at the New Caney post
office, family members said.
Both April and Mike Davis declined
comment. She burst into tears when hugged by a well-wisher and sat
anxiously waiting by the creek bank behind their house until taken by
FBI authorities to give a formal statement.
She told investigators
that she had bolted the lock on the front door while her children slept
and then had fallen asleep for a few minutes.
When she somehow "startled" into waking, she found her son was missing and the front door wide open.
She also told investigators the doors to her Jeep were also ajar, though she had left them closed.
Frantically,
she raced around looking and calling for him for about 35 minutes
before dialing 911, which eventually triggered an Amber alert.
Evans
said the investigation has found nothing so far that indicates the
boy's disappearance was anything more than an accident, but he is not
ruling out the possibility of foul play.

Re: DEVON DAVIS - 2 yo - Cleveland TX
Still no sign of a
two-year-old boy who has been missing since Tuesday. Search teams have
just about lost all hope of finding him alive and are now switching to a
recovery mode.
EquuSearch
volunteers line up a few feet apart and when given the order, they march
into a mosquito infested swamp looking for two-year-old Devon Davis who
was last seen on Tuesday.
They walk until the brush prevents them from going any further. Then
they come back. They line up about another five yards down the road and
repeat the whole process all over again.
Dennis Waters is a volunteer who flew in from St. Louis to help with
the search. Waters spent the morning combing a nearby stream with sonar
equipment.
"Unfortunately, my part of this search is suspended. I’ve cleared
all the water I can clear that’s in a reasonable walking distance of a
small child. I’ve done all I can do, but the EquuSearch team is ongoing,
they’re committed to this search until something else develops."
Waters says as a volunteer searcher, he’s helped recover 62 bodies in
the past seven years. In this, he says he doesn’t believe it’s necessary
to look very far downstream.
"I just don’t feel like there’s enough current to move a small child past the first log that he would’ve hit."
Tim Miller is the head of EquuSearch. He says the reality has sunk in
for his crew that the goal of their search efforts has now changed.
"Very Very frustrating. I know that we hope for that miracle that I
truly do not believe is going to happen, that Devon is going to come
back alive. I truly don’t think that is going to happen. This morning I
think we all agreed that we are in recovery move. That’s very very sad.
We take this very serious very personal."
The boy’s mom April Davis, told authorities that she last saw her son
when she put him and his one-year-old sister down for a nap about 2:30
p.m. Tuesday. He hasn’t been seen since. Miller says he spoke with Davis
briefly.
"And I hugged her neck and I said, 'Is today any better for you?' And she said, 'Every moment gets worse.'"
The EqquSearch volunteers say if little Devon is out there, they’ll
find him. And while authorities maintain they don’t suspect foul play,
the fact that they are looking in places a two-year-old couldn’t
possibly walk to means they are literally leaving no stone unturned in
this case.

the past seven years.
The EqquSearch volunteers say if little Devon is out there, they’ll
find him. And while authorities maintain they don’t suspect foul play,
the fact that they are looking in places a two-year-old couldn’t
possibly walk to means they are literally leaving no stone unturned in
this case.

Amber Alert issued for Devon Davis

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas -
The mother of a 2-year-old boy
who has been missing for several days spoke out Friday, and sources
close to the investigation said she failed portions of a polygraph test.
An
Amber Alert was issued for Devon Davis on Tuesday. Liberty County
sheriff's deputies said Devon wandered off into a wooded area while his
mother, April Davis, and 1-year-old sister were napping at their new
home in the Sam Houston Lake Estates area near Tarkington about 3:30
p.m.
Davis said she found the door open and
her son was gone. Investigators said Davis told them that Devon opened a
latch on the door.
Davis spoke to reporters Friday morning.
"I'm
April. I'm Devon's mom. If you know anything, if you've seen anything,
please just call somebody. Bring him home with me. He needs to be home
with his family. Somebody has to know something, somewhere. Please,
help me find my son," April Davis said.
Davis said her son was recently ill and asked that he be taken to a hospital if he's found.
"He's just getting over pneumonia," she said. "He might be sick. Bring him to a hospital."
Davis indicated that she thinks someone has her son.
"If
you're scared, I understand there's a lot of stuff going on," she said.
"Do the right thing. Bring him to the hospital. Call somebody. People
do not vanish. There is something out there and somebody knows
something, somebody saw something somewhere. Please find him. Please
help me."
Two sources close to the search and investigation told
KPRC Local 2 Friday that Davis failed parts of a polygraph test. The
sources declined to elaborate on which parts where failed. They stressed
that does not mean anything nefarious happened and polygraphs can be
imperfect, especially since she is in a very emotional state.
"He is the sweetest child you could ever meet," Davis said of Devon. "He's happy, he's friendly. He's a good kid."
Officials
and volunteers have searched by air, land and water, but found nothing.
On Thursday, Liberty County officials said the search changed to a
recovery mission, meaning that they don't expect to find the boy alive.
Capt. Rex Evans said he had to have a difficult talk with Devon's parents Thursday morning.
"There is a negative end to this that you kind of have to prepare yourself for," said Evans.
Texas EquuSearch has used sonar devices to look for Devon.
"The problem with doing the sonar is there's just so much
debris underneath the water," Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller said.
"You get a false image and you have to go back over it two or three
times to determine what it is."
Miller said the terrain is
difficult to search because of the woods, water, and wildlife. He said
his volunteers have seen alligators, snakes, and wild boars. Immigration
and Customs Enforcement agents armed with rifles are standing on the
banks while divers search the water to protect them from alligators.
Detectives
said they have searched every building in a one-mile radius of the home
without luck. The search was widened on Thursday. Dozens of dogs were
used to search the area for any signs of the boy.
Investigators have searched Devon's home looking for clues, too.
Investigators said they have not ruled out anything, including the possibility of foul play.
"A third party or foul play is still certainly part of our investigation," Evans said.
Crews said they will continue to search until they find Devon to help give the family closure.
"I need my son," Davis said. "I need to know. I need some answers."
Officials
said there is no more need for civilian volunteers. However, water
donations are needed because conditions are so harsh.
Devon is 30
inches tall and weighs 40 pounds with red hair and blue eyes. He was
last seen wearing a red and gray jersey T-shirt, jeans and Spiderman
tennis shoes.
The Davis family has only lived in their home a week. They moved to the area from Virginia.
Anyone with information regarding Devon's whereabouts is asked to call the Liberty County Sheriff's Office at 936-336-4500.

CLEVELAND, Texas – Authorities in Liberty County have located the body of Devon Davis, the two-year-old boy who went missing earlier this week.
Devon was found dead in a body of water Saturday afternoon just one hour after Liberty County officials announced their decision to suspend the search.
Authorities feverishly searched for the child after he disappeared Tuesday from the family’s home in the Sam Houston Lakes Estate subdivision, located near FM 2252 and FM 2518.
The toddler was last seen when his mom put him down for a nap.
Devon’s mother told investigators that she put the toddler and his sister down, bolted the front door and went to sleep herself.
When she woke up, the boy was gone.
Devon and his family had only been living at the home in Liberty County for six days. They recently moved from Virginia, and were staying with a family friend.
Investigators said after she realized the boy was gone, the mother called 911.
An Amber Alert was issued for the boy Tuesday evening, and crews immediately launched an extensive search.
Aided by helicopters, search dogs and sonar equipment from Texas EquuSearch, volunteers and authorities combed through the rough, wooded terrain, but found no sign of the child.
Concerned neighbors said the area was full of wild animals and water.
“It’s a mean river. She’ll take a life in a heartbeat, she’s taken a lot of them,” neighbor Deborah Scott said. “What I’m worried about is the gators. There’s gators everywhere, and they’re crawling real bad, and we’ve got snakes out here too. I can’t believe this baby is missing.”

Mom of missing toddler fails part of polygraph

The mother of a Liberty County toddler who has been missing since Tuesday has failed parts of a polygraph test, according to a law enforcement source close to the investigation.
April Davis, who offered a tearful plea today to the public, begging anyone to help her find her son, took the polygraph test Thursday, said the source who did not want to be identified.
Davis on Friday asked anyone with information about her missing 2½-year-old son, Devon Davis, to come forward. She said she needs answers after her son disappeared after being put down for a nap Tuesday afternoon.
Liberty County Sheriff deputies continued their search today for the missing toddler, but officials are not optimistic that they'll find the boy who was last seen on Tuesday.
"I'm begging anyone who saw anything to come forward," Davis said. "If you know anything come forward. I promise I've talekd to people. And you won't get in trouble."
She described Devon as a happy, sweet and friendly child who liked to play with swords. She said he was a fighter, having almost lost him when he was born premature.
Searchers have been looking for Devon for the past three days without any luck. Officials shifted their search Thursday from rescuing the toddler to finding his body after officials said the chances of finding him appear slim.
"After so many days in this kind of environment, the odds are against him being alive," said Liberty County Sheriff's spokesman Rex Evans, his Stetson dripping with water.
Evans noted that sharpshooters had to protect the searchers from feral hogs, poisonous snakes and alligators in the murky waterways and dense woods.
By nightfall Thursday - and despite some four dozen dogs trained to detect the scent of a dead body - no sign of Devon was found within a mile of the two-story frame house east of Cleveland, near the Tarkington Prairie community, where his family was living.
At a vigil Thursday night at a small church, about 40 people lit candles for the red-haired little boy, hoping he would still be found alive. Devon's younger sister was among the crowd.
"We want to give the family hope," said the Rev. Don Knox Jr., pastor at Davis Hill Baptist Church. "And I asked them to light the candles again when they get home because the young boy is still missing."
April Davis said she put Devon down for a nap with his 1-year-old sister about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. She told authorities that she, too, had dozed off after bolting the front door.
But 25 minutes later, she said, she awoke to find the door wide open and her son, wearing jeans but barefoot, gone.
She also said the doors to her Jeep, which had been closed, were ajar, and the upstairs window where the children had been sleeping had been left open, Evans said.
Texas Rangers had marked a half-dozen spots on the ground below the window and, wearing blue rubber gloves, collected specimens from the ground and sealed them in bags.
Evans declined to identify the material: "We're not letting that out now."
Devon's parents avoided the media Thursday, but could be seen talking to a couple of ministers.
The family moved here to live temporarily in a home owned by one of Mike Davis' friends from the Army. The friend helped him get a welding job, and the two men were working in Louisiana when the boy vanished.
FBI investigators, using personality profilers, re-interviewed April Davis on Thursday. Technicians also processed the house in search of clues to the disappearance.
"Still, right now," said Evans, "we have no idea where he is."

Liberty County boy’s body found in pond near home
A drone aircraft operated by volunteers from Texas Equusearch on Saturday located what is believed to be the body of missing 2-year-old Devon Davis floating in an algae-covered pond about 300-yards from his parents’ home in Cleveland.
The search for the red-headed toddler has been discontinued for the time being, said Texas Equusearch coordinator Ken DeFoor.
“Texas Equusearch has been asked to step down as the investigation has reached a possible conclusion,” DeFoor said. “Our searchers are very exhausted. It’s hot out here, these woods are thick, they’ve been going since Wednesday morning all day long, and it’s very taxing, but we’re very relieved that there’s a conclusion to the search. It’s a bad conclusion but it’s a conclusion at least.”
Texas Equusearch launched the drone about 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, the first day that weather permitted, DeFoor said.
From an altitude of 400 feet, the drone’s digital camera picked up a red shirt worn by the boy, who appeared to be floating in the southwest corner of the pond, he said.
“Once we got the photographs from the airplane back to the outpost, we reviewed the images and you could see a red color that looked out of place,” DeFoor said.
A helicopter flew over to confirm, and now law enforcement are in the process of retrieving the body, he said.
Devon disappeared on Tuesday after his mother said she put him down for a nap.
“The good Lord answered our prayer,” DeFoor said. “… We asked for guidance today to guide our searchers, and that’s where He led our drone. We’re just glad we can offer some resolution to the family.”
Authorities announced at a press conference Saturday that they will proceed with a criminal investigation of the case, KTRK reported.
The FBI has questioned the boy’s mother, April Davis, who was alone with Devon and her one-year-old that afternoon, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday. They have also collected specimens from around their house.
Davis was given a polygraph test and a law enforcement source said she failed part of it. However, Liberty County Sheriff’s spokesman Rex Evans has not discussed the test results or other elements of the investigation publicly.
Davis made her first statements to the media Friday, wiping away tears and pleading with viewers to help find her son. “I know somebody out there must have seen something,” Davis said.

Devin Davis's Death Ruled Accidental Drowning
CLEVELAND, Texas - Autopsy results show 2-year-old Devin Davis was the victim of an accidental drowning. He was found in a Liberty County pond after disappearing last week.
Devin's funeral will be held Friday.
Searchers looked for Davis all last week after he disappeared while his mother napped at a friend's home.
It took a drone aircraft operated by Texas EquuSearch to locate the boy's body in a pond near the house the boy and his family had been staying at after recently moving to Texas.
The search ended with that discovery on Saturday after four days of searching for the child.
His mother told investigators she took a nap last Tuesday afternoon, and when she awoke Devin was gone.
The founder of Texas EquuSearch says he believes the 2-year-old just wandered off.
"This is why they call children they're in their 'terrible two's,'" said Tim Miller. "We're going to do everything we can to make sure he has the best funeral after this."
"We ask everybody please keep this family in their prayers," said Liberty County Sheriff's Office Captain Rex Evans. "And the rescuers: again thank you for all of your help and support in bringing Devin home to his family."
The visitation will be at Neal Funeral Home in Cleveland on Washington Street on Thursday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The service is at Cornerstone Church of Cleveland on 105 between Cleveland and Conroe on Friday at 1 p.m. The service will be attended by Liberty County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, Texas EquuSearch, Volunteer Firefighters and the many others who helped in the searched for Devon Davis.

Parents of drowned toddler, Devon Davis, snatch baby from foster home
May 9th, 2012
The parents of Devon Davis, the 2-year-old toddler who was found dead
after drowning in a pond near his Houston, Texas home, have apparently
kidnapped their infant daughter, Abbygail, from her foster home and
fled. The parents of drowning victim, Devon, reportedly left their
house, after packing up all their belongings and went to visit their
daughter with what police believe, the intention of taking their baby
and leaving town.
Child Protective Services reportedly removed the infant from Michael
and April Davis’ care after their son had been reported missing on March
28. He was found about 3 days later, about 300 feet from the couples
home. Devon had drowned in a pond.
Police believe the youngster managed to slip out of the house while his mother was napping. The drowning was ruled accidental.
The tragedy lead to an investigation of the couple, although April
was never considered a suspect. After their infant was taken away, the
couple reportedly visited her frequently at her foster home without incident.
After the initial report of suspected kidnapping, police looked into
the baby’s placement and found that the child was placed into foster
care without court order. The parents are not considered fugitives
because the baby appears to have been placed unlawfully. The Liberty
County Sheriff’s office says the couple will not be charged with a crime
because none was committed.
