Father arrested in alleged cemetery sacrifice of son

Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego, California, where Joseph Ramirez reportedly heard voices telling him to sacrifice his son.

DIEGO — San Diego police said they have arrested a man who slashed his
8-year-old son's forearms at a cemetery after hearing voices in his head
telling him to sacrifice the boy.
Officer David Stafford said 30-year-old Joseph Ramirez also cut his own arms at Mount Hope Cemetery Saturday.
U-T San Diego reports that a woman who was visiting the cemetery confronted Ramirez and begged him to let the boy go. Jaymisha Pires said Ramirez repeatedly said "We're going to Jesus" before shoving the boy aside and ran.
Ramirez
was tackled by a security guard, and police took him to a hospital for
treatment of his injury. Stafford said he will be booked for
investigation of child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon.
The child's condition was not immediately released

— A man accused of slashing and wounding his 8-year-old in a cemetery
was ordered Monday to stand trial on charges of attempted murder and
felony child abuse.
Joseph Adalberto Ramirez, 31, of San Diego was arrested April 28, after
witnesses saw him allegedly slicing his son’s forearms at Mount Hope Cemetery.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Peter Deddeh ruled during a preliminary hearing that enough
evidence had been presented for Ramirez to stand trial. The judge kept bail at $2 million.
If convicted of the charges, and allegations he caused great bodily injury,
Ramirez faces a sentence of up to 13 years in prison.
Police and prosecutors said Ramirez took his wife, son and two younger
daughters to the cemetery that afternoon, just before 4:30 p.m., where the incident occurred.
Two witnesses, Jaymisha Pires and Corey Granberry, were visiting the
cemetery that day and intervened. Pires has said she confronted Ramirez,
who eventually released the boy and ran.
Deputy District Attorney Scott Pirrello said the witnesses heard Ramirez
saying his family was followed by evil and that it was “time for his family to be in heaven.”
