TOWN OF PLEASANT SPRINGS, Wis. -
Two
teenagers were reported missing late Thursday afternoon near Lake
Kegonsa, and the Dane County sheriff's department has not had any luck
in trying to find the missing girls.

The
two teens, Emma Maurer, 16, of Stoughton, and Sydnie Kwiatkowski, 16,
of Footville, were reported missing just before 8 p.m. Thursday. Both
were last seen with friends on a beach off Lake Kegonsa in Lafollette
County Park north of Stoughton around 4 p.m.

The
friends left the area briefly, and when they returned, they found
personal items of the two teens, but no sign of either one. Family
members contacted 911 when they were unable to find the teens.

Dane
County deputies, including members of the dive team, responded to the
area to look for any signs of the two teens, but came up empty.

The
sheriff's office is requesting anyone who may have had contact with
either one to please call 911 or the Dane County sheriff's tipster
hotline at 284-6900.

TOWN OF PLEASANT SPRINGS, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities have recovered
the bodies of two missing girls who disappeared near a Dane County lake.

Sheriff's
deputies recovered the body of one of the missing girls from Lake
Kegonsa shortly before noon Friday. The body was found in the water
near where the girls' personal items were left on shore Thursday
afternoon.

Deputies recovered the body of the second girl in the same location around 4:10 p.m.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney says the two were last seen swimming in Lake Kegonsa in
LaFollette County Park about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Emma Mauer, of
Stoughton, and Sydnie Kwiatkowski, of Footville, and three friends went
to the park about 2 p.m. The friends left the area for a time and said
the girls were gone when they returned.

The investigation continues.

Release from Dane County Sheriff's Office:
Shortly
before noon today, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies recovered the body of
one of the missing girls from Lake Kegonsa. Deputies conducting a
search found her in the water near the location of their personal items
that had been left on the shoreline.

At
approximately 4:10 pm, the body of the second girl was recovered by
deputies in the same location. This investigation is ongoing, and any
information regarding cause and manner of death will be released by the
Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

On
behalf of everyone at the Sheriff’s Office, we send our most heart-felt
sympathy to the families and friends of Emma and Sydnie. The Sheriff’s
Office also wishes to thank all of the volunteers and organizations
that came and/or offered to help in the search.

Dane
County Sheriff's Office confirms they have found the second body (at
around 4:00 p.m.). Authorities say it was found in the lake.

Dane County Sheriff's Office Press Conference:

The
search continues for the remaining 16-year-old girl from Stoughton. One
body was found around noon. Authorities have not released which girl
has been found. The body was found feet from the shoreline. The water
in the area they're searching is about 4 to 6 feet deep.

Sheriff
Dave Mahoney says he feels confident they are on the right track to
finding the second body. They will continue searching into the evening.

An autopsy will be conducted on the first body on Saturday.

young female has been found along the shore of a Dane County lake near
where two teenage girls disappeared.

Sheriff's
spokeswoman Elise Schaffer says the body is believed to be that of one
of the girls, but has not been identified. Schaffer says the body was
found near where the girls' personal items were left on shore Thursday
afternoon.

The search continues for the second girl.

search on the lake, but are also searching the trails and woods near

washed up on shore. No word yet on her identity.

lake and the woods and trails around it for two 16-year-old girls who
vanished, leaving behind their cell phones, purses and shoes.

Sheriff
Dave Mahoney says the two were last seen swimming in Lake Kegonsa in
LaFollette County Park late Thursday afternoon. Mahoney says sonar is
being used on the lake and search dogs have been brought to the scene.

Emma
Mauer, of Stoughton, and Sydnie Kwiatkowski, of Footville, and three
friends went to the park about 2 p.m. The friends left the area for a
time and said the girls were gone when they returned. A fisherman last
saw the girls swimming in the lake about 4:30 p.m. Friends reported
them missing about 8 p.m.

I just have a hinky feeling that something is wrong here.
Looking at the map (http://www.kegonsacove.com/KegonsaMap.pdf) it would seem that BOTH girls drowned in water that would not have any type of undertow. The thing that is disturbing to me is that this occurred after their friends "left for awhile".
Certainly the investigators are now conducting interviews and putting pieces together and until this is ruled accidental I stand perplexed
