The mother of a 3-year-old girl who was beaten to death will face
trial on murder and child abuse charges, a judge ruled Friday, as will
the mother’s boyfriend.

Victoria Phanhtharath, 22, and Freddy Mendez, 24, are accused of
killing Alexis Hawkins, who died of head trauma and blunt force,
according to the state medical examiner’s office.

Alexis died of her injuries Oct. 30 at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center.

After hearing testimony from two detectives and a doctor who treated
the girl, Oklahoma County Special Judge Fred D. Doak found probable
cause to order Phanhtharath and Mendez to trial on one count each of
first-degree murder, child abuse and enabling child abuse.

The couple pleaded not guilty to the charges through their attorneys.

Phanhtharath initially told police she shoved her daughter out of
frustration, causing the girl to strike her head on a wooden baby bed.
The mother said she saw the girl’s eyes roll back in her head and she
began choking, police reported.

Mendez, the mother told police, was screaming at Alexis for not
eating her breakfast and beat her with a leather shoe before the
incident.

But during a jail interview a few weeks after the girl’s death,
Phanhtharath admitted that Mendez picked up the girl and slammed her to
the floor so hard the back of her head bounced, Oklahoma City police
detective James Allen testified Friday during the couple’s preliminary
hearing.

Mendez then started punching and kicking the girl, Allen said the mother told him.

Phanhtharath said she picked up the girl and took her into a bedroom.
When she tried to stand her up, the girl was trembling and her eyes
didn’t look normal, the detective testified. It was then Alexis
collapsed, he said.

Phanhtharath told the detective she lied to cover for Mendez, who she said beat her and the girl regularly.

The detective also testified the Department of Human Services was
called twice to investigate reports of abuse by Phanhtharath, who has a
son with Mendez.

Dr. John Stuemky, a physician who treated Alexis, testified she was “clinically dead” when she arrived at the emergency room.

The girl, he said, had a massive skull fracture to the back of her
head, along with brain bleeding and swelling that was caused by
“something very violent, very massive.”

But what stood out were the bruises on the girl’s body, Stuemky told the judge.

“She had bruises everywhere,” he said. “You would take one look at this child and know that she had been beaten.”

OKLAHOMA CITY —The trial of a couple charged in the death of a 3-year-old Oklahoma City girl is expected to begin Monday.

Prosecutors charged the girl's mother, Victoria Phanhtharath, and her boyfriend, Freddy Mendez, in the child's 2011 death. Court documents show the Alexis Hawkins was beaten and hit her head on a hard surface.

She was taken to Children's Hospital, but died a day later from her injuries.

I just don't see how any one could look into those eye's of a gorgeous little angel and do her harm. If they did not want her there's plenty of families to give her care and love. No matter what your personal problems nothing justifies hitting a little baby. William

OKC Woman Pleads Guilty In Daughter's Death

A judge sentenced an Oklahoma City mother to 35 years in prison in exchange for her testifying against her boyfriend in the death of her three-year-old daughter.

On October 30, 2011, emergency crews were called to an apartment at 12831 Stratford Drive in northwest Oklahoma City to help an unresponsive child. Alexis Hawkins was taken to Children's Hospital where medical staff noticed several signs of abuse.

The child's mother, Victoria Phanhtharath, and the Phanhtharath's boyfriend were both arrested in her death.


Phanhtharath pleaded guilty on Monday to enabling murder and permitting child abuse.

Prosecutors have charged her boyfriend, Freddy Mendez, with first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and will go to trial in May.

She will testify against her man, whom she allowed to torture her baby to death, in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Both of them should rot in prison.

OMG this precious little baby was so beautiful, she looked like an angel. Now she is. Damn both of them to hell.

Yes, she looked like a gorgeous little angel. Who could hurt such a baby?? I would have loved her with all my heart and soul even if she was a girl friends child and not mine. People just don't care anymore. William
