Police say Delco man beat nephew to death
When his 6-year-old nephew wouldn't cooperate in picking out his school clothes for the next day, a Delaware County man - a black belt in karate - beat him to death, officials said.
Paul Adams, 38 of Wallingford, allegedly lashed Tyreece Charlow with a large belt after the child failed to follow directions promptly, the District Attorney's Office said.
"The beating lasted 45 minutes," District Attorney Jack Whelan said. He called the incident a "heinous, savage beating," adding that medical examiner's staff said they had not seen a worse case of child abuse. An autopsy revealed that Tyreece died of blunt-force trauma.
Adams, who holds a fourth-degree black belt, has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail at the Delaware County Prison.
Whelan said Adams used more than his belt in administering the beating Thursday.
"This uncle utilized his hands and/or feet to kill this child," he said. Adams' only regret, Whelan said, was drawing blood.
It was not clear why the child, a student at Nether Providence Elementary School, lived with Adams, Whelan said, adding that he did not know the name or address of the child's mother.
Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Superintendent Rich Noonan said Tyreece, who had attended the school since kindergarten, was known as a "normal, happy first grader."
"The whole thing is a terrible, shocking tragedy for all of us," Noonan said. He said that counselors were at the school Monday and that a special meeting was held later in the day for parents.
According to court documents, after picking up Tyreece from school, Adams told police, the two attended a karate class in West Chester.
When they returned home after 10 p.m., the boy went upstairs, brushed his teeth, took a shower, put on pajamas, and returned downstairs to say his prayers.
The uncle said they went over the plans for the next day, including choosing clothes. Adams set a timer and told Tyreece he had three minutes to get everything ready. When Tyreece did not comply, he beat the boy first with a small belt, then reset the timer and retrieved a wider belt.
He removed the boy's pajamas and continued to strike him, restraining the child's hands. The child fell to the ground when Adams stopped the beating.
He cleaned the wounds with peroxide and put the naked boy to bed. Adams told police that when he first returned to check on the boy, he thought he was asleep, but a few hours later he found Tyreece unresponsive, with a brown liquid coming from his mouth, according to court documents.
Adams brought the boy to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead early Friday.
"We don't believe the child was breathing at the time he was brought into the medical center," Whelan said.

This is so sad. I can't help but wonder why this poor little boy was with his uncle. Surely the man's family knew he was a hot headed monster lacking brains.
This poor little boy was probably abused long before he was beaten to death.

The Delaware County Daily Times reports that Delaware County Judge Mary Alice Brennan warned Paul Adams Jr. of Wallingford several times Wednesday he would be removed if he continued to talk out of turn.
He rejected the court's authority and repeatedly asked the judge to provide proof of jurisdiction, saying he did not consent to the proceeding. Adams was arraigned on homicide and other counts.
Prosecutors allege Adams beat Tyreece Charlow for 45 minutes in November because he wouldn't get his school clothes ready for the next day. Adams is a fourth-degree black belt in karate.

Uncle gets 30 to 60 years in nephew's death

MEDIA COURTHOUSE -- A 38-year-old Wallingford man entered a no contest plea to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in a state correctional facility for the Nov. 1, 2012, beating death of his 6-year-old nephew, Tyreece Charlow.
Paul M. Adams Jr. additionally pleaded no contest to charges of possessing an instrument of crime, endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful restraint.
Adams had repeatedly challenged the court's authority at his arraignment in March and had to be removed from the courtroom, but it was a much more subdued man who gave nearly inaudible "yes" or "no" answers to his attorney, Charles Williams, and Judge Mary Alice Brennan during Thursday's hearing. He declined to make any statement prior to sentencing.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Daniel McDevitt offered an affidavit of probable cause and several additional items in support of the plea, including a statement Adams gave to police at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
Adams claimed the boy had gone to karate classes that night, but had not had any physical contact with other students. After returning to Adams' home on the 200 block of Walnut Road, where Tyreece also lived, Adams said he had to "discipline" the boy because of his behavioral problems.
"That included holding Tyreece up in the air, holding him up with one hand as he smacked him with a belt on his buttocks," McDevitt said. "The defendant said it was a 'good spanking' and at some point Tyreece became limp and he hit his head as he fell to the hardwood floor."
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Adams, a fourth-degree black belt in karate and a former U.S. Army reservist, struck Tyreece several times with a belt before getting a larger belt to continue the punishment. He then poured peroxide on the boy's wounds and sent him to bed naked.
Adams checked on Tyreece some hours later and found he had labored, shallow breathing, according to a pediatrician's report taken at the hospital. When he checked on the boy a half-hour later, Adams found his breathing had worsened. After attempting to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, a brown fluid and blood came out of his mouth, according to the report. That was when
Adams took Tyreece to the emergency room, where he died.
A post-mortem report prepared by Delaware County Assistant Medical Examiner Bennett Preston found Tyreece had died of "multiple blunt-force injuries," with abrasions to his head, neck, chest and abdomen. The cause of death was ruled a homicide.
According to the medical examiner, Tyreece's injuries were consistent with being punched or kicked and struck with a belt. His neck injuries were consistent with someone grabbing him.
The boy suffered hemorrhaging in his pancreas, large and small bowel and abdominal wall and both of his testicles had been crushed, McDevitt said. Tyreece also suffered injuries to his extremities, and had bruises and abrasions virtually covering his body.
Three of four belts or belt pieces recovered from the home and analyzed by the Pennsylvania State Police tested positive for Tyreece's blood, McDevitt said.
McDevitt noted the boy's mother was present, but did not wish to give a statement.
Williams said his client also did not wish to comment, but added that he did not have any specific intent to kill Tyreece, a required element of third-degree murder.
Adams was sentenced to 20-40 years for the murder charge, as well as two and a half to five years for endangering the welfare of a child and possessing an instrument of crime. He was also sentenced to five to 10 years for unlawful restraint, all running consecutive.

This may have been her brother but she is still...
Another POS mother. Another POS man. Another dead baby.
Thank God for the judges that give consecutive sentences instead of concurrent ones. I hope he rots in there.
