Severely malnourished 1-year-old twins taken to Kosair; mother charged with abuse

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A woman will be arraigned Tuesday on charges of child abuse after her twin 1-year-olds were found severely malnourished and neglected, according to a release from the Commonwealth Attorney's office.

Stephanie Adams, age 24, will be arraigned Sept. 2 on two counts of child abuse.

Child Protective Services transported Adams' children to Kosair Children's Hospital where the girl weighed 15 pounds and the boy weighed in at a near-deadly weight of 11 pounds, according to the Commonwealth Attorney's office.

"An average 12-month-old female should be somewhere between 18 to 22 pounds. An average one-year-old male should be 20 to 22 pounds so it sounds like the little boy is truly behind," Dr. Emily Johnson said.

Dr. Johnson, who treats children at Kaplan Barron Pediatric Group, isn't treating the twins, but offered her pediatric expertise as the children receive medial treatment.

"To be that small at a year old can cause a lot of problems down the line. Long term, not only do you have the medical issues but you also have a lot of emotional and relationship issues," Dr. Johnson said.

A grand jury indicted Adams for abuse that occurred between May 27, 2013 and June 11, 2014.

The indictment alleges the Adams allowed her twins to be medically neglected as well as severely malnourished.

Adams is charged with two counts of first-degree child abuse and is being held in Metro Corrections on a $10,000 bond.
