THIS is the haunting moment a perverted monster gives a toddler the kiss of life – as she dies from injuries sustained from his horrific campaign of abuse.

Sadistic Barry McCarney, 33, was caught on CCTV in Erne Hospital in Northern Ireland, cradling his girlfriend’s 15-month-old daughter Millie Martin in his arms.

The paedophile was desperately trying to bring her back to life but she had been so badly abused that she died of her injuries.

Yesterday, a judge branded McCarney's crimes despicable, describing the murder in December 2009 as “almost beyond understanding”.

The NSPCC said it was “one of the most horrific cases of child abuse Northern Ireland has ever seen”.

McCarney, from County Tyrone, was found guilty of murder, sexual assault and causing grievous bodily harm at Dungannon Crown Court.

He physically and sexually abused her until she was left with a number of fatal injuries, including the head wound that killed her, the court heard during a ten-week trial.

The violent pervert had met Millie's mother Rachael Martin just three months before the toddler’s death, easing his way into the family home in Enniskillen for access to Millie.

A pathologist found that Millie had suffered 21 cracked ribs, including 14 which happened in the ten days before her death.

Multiple bruises were found on her body during the post-mortem examination, along with abdominal injuries from punching or prodding which would also have been fatal.
Millie had also been sexually assaulted, which the prosecution branded vile and sadistic.

McCarney blamed Millie's mother Rachael for the injuries on her own daughter, alleging that Ms Martin did not want social services involved because she had done these “terrible things” herself.

But the jury rejected McCarney's claims, accepting that Ms Martin had unwittingly let a monster into her home, taking just three hours to reach a unanimous verdict.

He will be sentenced in the New Year.

Ms Martin sobbed as she was cleared of allowing her daughter's death through willful neglect.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Ms Martin’s brother Matthew said the police decision to prosecute her was “shocking” at a time when she should have been left to grieve for baby Millie.

Neil Anderson, head of the NSPCC, said Millie will be remembered as the victim of “one of the most horrific cases of child abuse Northern Ireland has ever seen”.

He added: “One clear message from this deeply disturbing case is the need for vigilance among healthcare professionals, family, friends, neighbours and the community as a whole.

“It is vitally important that everyone who has a role in working with and caring for children is aware of the signs of abuse.”
