Amanda Sorensen, California Woman, Arrested In Connection With Toddler's 'Chili Powder' Death
Posted: 01/08/2013 12:20 pm EST | Updated: 01/09/2013 2:22 am EST
Police in Apple Valley, Calif., took 21-year-old Amanda Sorensen into custody Monday in connection with the death of her boyfriend's 2-year-old daughter, according to multiple sources.
While the autopsy will reveal the actual cause of the girl's death, authorities believe the toddler's ingestion of chili powder led to a fatal seizure, KABC-TV reports.
Sorensen was arrested on suspicion of child abuse in connection with the 2-year-old's death. According to KTLA, police said the toddler might have been forced to ingest the chili powder.
San Bernardino County police were called to a house on Cayuga Road Sunday afternoon following the chili powder incident, KCAL notes. Although the 2-year-old was rushed to a local hospital, she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
While the investigation is ongoing, pending the child's autopsy results, Sorensen is currently being held on $500,000 bail. She is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
In 2005, Texas mother Angela DiSabella received a seven-year prison sentence after being convicted of manslaughter in the death of her 5-month-old daughter. DiSabella, who was accused of suffocating her daughter, was reportedly using chili powder as a technique to stop thumb-sucking, the Associated Press reported at the time.

THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF CHILLI
Chilli's main ingredient Capsaicin is an irritant in humans and other mammals, causing a burning sensation in the tissues with which it comes into contact.
Airway resistance increases following inhalation of capsaicin in both mild asthmatics and non-asthmatic people.
Capsaicin can be fatal in large quantities. Symptoms of overdose include difficulty breathing, convulsions, and changes in skin colour

Why punish a little 2 year old at all. They are just babies. I know about allergies and breathing problems from my health issues. It breaks my heart that she suffered so. I shed a few tears and my soul cries for this little angel.

A California woman accused of feeding chili powder to her boyfriend's daughter, causing the toddler to have a seizure and die, has been charged with first-degree murder, prosecutors said Wednesday.
In a complaint filed in San Bernardino County Superior Court in Victorville, prosecutors said that Amanda Sorensen, 21, acted with "malice aforethought" to murder the child, a 2-year-old who was called Joileen G. in court papers.
The girl was earlier identified by the San Bernardino County coroner's office as Joileen Garcia, shown in a family photo here.

The complaint also accused Sorensen with assaulting a child.
Authorities were called out on a report of a girl suffering from a seizure after ingesting chili powder at a home in the 20000 block of Cayuga Road in Apple Valley on Sunday.
She later died at a hospital. Sorensen, the girlfriend of Joileen’s father, was booked into the San Bernardino County Jail on a charge of assaulting a child and causing death, online records show.
Sorensen was scheduled to be arraigned late in the afternoon on Wednesday, but the hearing was rescheduled for Thursday.
At the courthouse Wednesday was a man who said he was the boyfriend of the toddler's biological mother. Manuel Lopez said he had raised Joileen since she was 1.5 years old and considered himself her father.
"Early in the morning, she would always jump into bed with us. She went with us everywhere," Lopez said. "Bright kid, smart, intelligent, running around. ... She loved animals and horses."
He said Joileen's biological mother was devastated.
"She's just broken down," Lopez said.
