Cops: Two boys, grandmother found dead after she takes them from day care

Two young boys who were taken from their day care center Tuesday have been found dead in Preston, Conn.

Their grandmother, Debra Denison, who according to state police took the boys, was also found dead.

State police had received a call from civilians around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday reporting that a suspicious vehicle was parked near Lake of Isle in Preston.

It was reported that three injured people were inside the car, two which appeared to be children.

Troopers and EMS responded to the scene and located the vehicle, following an Amber Alert. One adult and two children were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The state police were investigating.

The Amber Alert was issued for Ashton and Alton Perry who were last seen in North Stonington around 2:36 p.m.

Jeremy and Brenda Perry, parents of the two young boys, told NBC Connecticut that Denison had a gun and she had a mental illness.

Alton Perry turned 2 years old Tuesday and Ashton Perry was six months of age.

Two Boys Found Dead After Amber Alert

A grandmother who was supposed to take her two grandsons from daycare to their birthday party at home instead killed the boys and herself, Connecticut state police said.

All three bodies were found in a car Tuesday evening, two hours after an Amber Alert went out for the 2-year-old and 6-month-old. Police have classified the case as a double murder-suicide and said all three had apparent gunshot wounds, according to state police.

The last time Ashton, 2, and 6-month-old Alton Perry had been seen alive was around 2:30 p.m. in North Stonington, when their grandmother, Debra Denison, picked them up from daycare, according to state police.

The boys' mother, Brenda Perry, called state police around 4 p.m., when she could not find her sons and their grandmother, state police said.

She said she wanted the little boys to leave daycare early because it was Alton's birthday and they were supposed to open his presents. But the little boys and their grandmother never arrived for the party.

"I wanted him to come home and play with his new toys and have a good day," Brenda Perry said.

An Amber Alert for was issued around 7:30 p.m., according to state police, soon after a family member found a suicide note Denison had left behind.

Police said Denison suffered from mental illness and Brenda and her husband, Jeremy Perry, told NBC Connecticut that Denison had a gun and suffered from split personalities.

Around 9:30 p.m., two hours after the alert was issued, state police received the call that would reveal the tragic end to the Amber Alert.

A caller said a suspicious vehicle was parked near Lake of Isle in Preston and three injured people were inside the car. Two of them appeared to be children.

Troopers and EMS responded, located the vehicle and a revolver and found Denison and her two grandsons. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The state police are investigating and the Office of the Chief States Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Why was a mentally ill woman allowed to remove these poor babies from daycare?

She was angry about something and exacted revenge in the most horrible way. Disgusting. Even mentally ill she knew how wrong and how horrible this was. This is heartbreaking. Unbelievable.

PRESTON, Conn. (AP/WPRI) -- A relative of two young boys killed in an apparent murder-suicide says their grandmother insisted on picking the children up alone -- though their mother had objected.

Connecticut State Police say that after getting the children from a daycare center on Tuesday the grandmother, Debra Denison, 47, apparently shot and killed them before turning the gun on herself.

Paternal great-grandmother, Marcia White, said the boys' mother, Brenda Perry, asked Denison to bring along another relative when picking up the children. White said Perry feared the boys were too much for Denison - who'd been diagnosed with bipolar disorder - to handle.

White said Denison wanted to pick up 2-year-old Alton Perry and 6-month-old Ashton Perry from daycare because it was Alton's birthday.

State police spokesman Lt. J Paul Vance said earlier in the day Denison had permission to pick the boys up from their daycare. She'd been armed, he said, when she left her home in Stonington Tuesday afternoon to go get them.

The police issued a region-wide Amber Alert Tuesday evening for the boys and their grandmother. Their three bodies were found in a parked car in Preston later in the night.

The chief medical examiner's office will be performing autopsies.

Grandmother Who Shot 2 Grandsons Left Suicide Note

New details about the grandmother who police said shot and killed her two grandsons before killing herself emerged on Wednesday night.

Family members said Debra Denison left a suicide note before she picked the children up from their North Stonington daycare on Tuesday.

Marcella Bartolo, a long-time friend of Denison’s, said she knew Debra for 10 years and Debra spent a lot of time with her grandchildren and took very good care of them.

Denison struggled with depression, openly discussed being bi-polar in the past and never showed any signs of threatening someone’s life, Bartolo said.

“She told me she was depressed sometimes, but you would never know it she always had a smile on her face,” Bartolo said.

“I was so upset, I didn't sleep all night,” said Bartolo, who is heartbroken over what happened to her friend and neighbor of 10 years on Tuesday.

“I just couldn't believe she would do anything like that. She just wasn't that kind of person,” Bartolo said.

Investigators found Denison, 6-month-old Ashton Perry and his 2-year-old brother Alton dead in a car in Preston on Tuesday night. It was Ashton's second birthday.

“She had her grand kids all the time. She had toys and stuff in the backyard for them,” Bartolo said.

Bartolo said she just saw Denison the other day, and never saw this coming.

Court documents showed Denison had been treated at Connecticut Behavioral Health and it had the state put a lien on her Stonington home for thousands of dollars of unpaid bills.

Her friend said Denison’s mental state had recently improved and never could have predicted this outcome.

“There must have been something bothering her. She might have gone off her medication. She had done that a couple times,” Bartolo said.

Investigators would not say what led to the killings.

Authorities have said Denison might have used her husband’s gun, but that was something that is still under investigation.

Bartolo said Denison never mentioned a weapon.

“I didn't know she had a gun. She never mentioned guns. I never assumed she had them with the kids in the house,” Bartolo said.

Bartolo said Denison always had kids at the home and told NBC Connecticut she had a granddaughter and a 13-year-old son.

A candlelight vigil for Ashton and Alton Perry is planned for Friday night at the North Stonington Recreation Facility.

HARTFORD >> A woman who shot and killed her two young grandsons before committing suicide last year left a note to the boys’ parents saying they did not deserve to have the children, according to a police report.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information request, suggests a possible motive for the first time and sheds new light on her mental health problems: The grandmother, Debra Denison, had a history of conflict with the boys’ mother and had attempted suicide a half dozen times before.

Denison, 47, picked up 2-year-old Alton Perry and 6-month-old Ashton Perry at a day care in North Stonington on Feb. 26, 2013, and was supposed to take them home for a birthday party but instead drove to a nearby lake where they were found shot to death after a frantic search.

In addition to a suicide note to her husband, Denison left a note addressed to the boys’ parents, Jeremy and Brenda Perry. Denison was Brenda Perry’s mother.

“The note stated among other things that Brenda and Jeremy did not deserve to have the children and Debra wanted them to feel the loss of a child,” state police Detective David Lamoureux wrote in a report on Oct. 22.

Brenda Perry told police she had struggled with her mother for years because of control issues and mental health problems including dissociative identity disorder, formerly called multiple personality disorder. Perry, 24, said her mother had told Jeremy lies about her in attempts to break up their relationship and she became more easily agitated after they married and had children.

In the months before the killings, Perry said they had decided to mend fences. Her mother seemed more stable and they were planning to go to counseling together.

Perry had recently added her mother to the list of people authorized to collect the children at day care, but Perry’s brother or sister was supposed to accompany Denison. The grandmother went alone, and day care workers said she was friendly and talkative as she loaded the children in her van.

Jance Denison, Debra’s husband, said the revolver that she used belonged to him and was left unloaded in their house. Jance Denison had acquired the gun from his brother months earlier because Debra Denison insisted on it being at her house following recent burglaries, the brother told police.

Jance Denison said Debra had attempted suicide at least six times over 20 years and been committed but he “never imagined Debbie was capable of this.”

Several relatives told police that Debra was upset by a letter she received about a week before the shootings from her son, Christopher Allen, who is serving a 32-year prison sentence for a drug-related murder.

Allen, who was interviewed in prison during the search for his nephews, said that when he was younger his mother told him he was a product of rape. A month and a half before the shooting, she told him that was a lie that she told because she did not want Allen’s biological father to raise him. Allen said the letter to his mother expressed “how I truly felt” about her.

The report from state police said the case is closed with no further investigation anticipated.
