Alabama man arrested in drowning death of child

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Kissimmee police have arrested an Alabama man in the drowning death of a 4-year-old girl.

Elijah Darnell Morton, 28, of Birmingham, Ala. is charged with aggravated child neglect.

Detectives said Morton and his girlfriend took nine children to a pool at the
Coral Cay Resort, 2300 Caravelle Cir., early Friday evening. Some of the
children were those of Morton and his girlfriend, while others were
relatives of the girlfriend, including the 4-year-old victim.

According to investigators, the child slid into the water sometime shortly before
8 p.m. and was found five minutes later on the bottom of the pool,
unresponsive. Attempts were made to resuscitate the girl before
emergency technicians arrived. She was taken to a hospital where she was
pronounced dead.

Detectives interviewed Morton who stated
he had not seen the young girl after she was in the kiddie pool at
approximately 7:50 p.m. Morton was seen near the child between 7:55 p.m.
and 8:00 p.m., when she was found at the bottom of the pool.

Morton was taken to the Osceola County Jail.
