Arlington man gets life sentence for killing girlfriend’s baby to stop crying

A jury has sentenced an Arlington man to life in prison for beating and shaking his girlfriend’s baby to death because she wouldn’t stop crying.
Austin Crawford, 27, was originally charged with capital murder, but after four hours of deliberations, the jury found him guilty of a lesser charge of murder. Jurors took just 10 minutes to sentence him to life in prison for the death of 10-month-old Kaylee Miller on Dec. 30, 2011.
The prosecution said Crawford was watching his girlfriend’s baby at their house while she was at work the night before the girl died. They showed evidence that when Kaylee wouldn’t stop crying, Crawford struck her.
He and his girlfriend found Kaylee blue and unresponsive the next day. She was taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth where she died.
Police confronted Crawford at the hospital about Kaylee’s injuries, and he confessed that she was crying and he “just wanted it to stop so he shook her.” The medical examiner told the jury that Kaylee wasn’t just shaken, she suffered four to five blows to her head that were caused by being hit with or against an object.
Crawford must serve 30 years before he is eligible for parole.
“Kaylee Miller will never turn 1. Kaylee Miller will never learn to ride a bike,” Prosecutor Kim D’Avignon said. “The jury’s verdict told this defendant, her family and the community that her life had value. We are deeply appreciative of the jury’s actions.”
